This book is dedicated to my wonderful son, Adam, still living and
working in the music industry in our beloved South Africa. Although
we have not been able to be together in person at this time, you are
always in my thoughts, and I am looking forward to a well-earned
holiday with you in South Africa shortly after completing the writing
of this book. I wish you all the love and happiness in the world as you
move to the next stage in your life. You make it all worthwhile.
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank everyone at Jessica Kingsley Publishers (JKP) who, once again,
have been very supportive while I wrote this latest book. Although I started writing
it in late 2019 and expected to submit the final manuscript in 2020, of course
everything changed when the pandemic hit. My company work and the necessary
efforts to change much of our teaching at Expectancy to online delivery suddenly
took precedence. For the first time in 30 years of writing textbooks, I have had
to ask for not one but four extensions to the submission date! Huge thanks to
Maddy Budd and her team for being so understanding; it won’t happen again!
Thanks to my colleagues, Laura Wallbank and Amanda Redford, for so ably
supporting Expectancy through a very difficult time, for moral support and for
occasionally holding the fort when I was desperately trying to catch up with the
writing. Amanda, who is Expectancy’s Programme Leader for our Certificate in
Midwifery Acupuncture, also read the acupuncture chapter for accuracy. I am
immensely grateful, too, to senior midwives Nikki Rai, Claire Mayhead, Fiona
Richmond and Wendy Marsh, previous students with Expectancy and now prac-
tising privately via our Licensed Consultancy scheme, who kindly agreed to read
the first two chapters for accuracy in respect of current midwifery and obstetric
practice relating to postdates pregnancy. Thanks also to all the midwives who
have studied with Expectancy over the years and whose numerous discussions
on postdates pregnancy have caused me to reflect on the current situation and
given me food for thought on issues which I hope I have included in the book.
