Abstract
Airborne Wind Energy is a young but promising technology utilizing airborne systems
to generate power from wind. The advantages over conventional wind power plants are
the signi(cid:28)cantly smaller material input and the ability to venture into higher altitudes,
generally characterized by faster and more persistent wind. Thus the power density is
not only higher, but also available more reliably. The approach taken by the company
SkySailsistousetetheredkites(cid:29)ownincrosswindmotion(crosswindkitepower). This
results in high tether forces exploited for power generation through a tether winch on
the ground. For these kite systems to be deployable in large scale, the kites have to
(cid:29)y their trajectories fully autonomously. The fundament of the controller necessary for
this is a reliable estimation of the kite position and attitude, as well as of the wind
conditions at (cid:29)ight level.
This thesis aims at designing and evaluating several estimators suitable for this task.
The implemented estimation algorithms are the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), the
Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and a (cid:28)rst approach to Moving Horizon Estimation
(MHE). While EKF and UKF are recursive algorithms of the same structure, MHE
explicitly takes into account the N most recent measurements, trying to (cid:28)nd the max-
imum likelihood trajectory for this time horizon by solving an optimization problem at
every time step.
Three di(cid:27)erent approaches are taken to the choice of the state vector and the corre-
sponding dynamic model. The (cid:28)rst is to express the kite orientation and position in
Euler angles and to model their time derivative based on the turn rates. The second
approach is analytically identical to the (cid:28)rst, but represents the orientation by quater-
nions instead. The third approach expands the second one by two Euler angles to
represent the position separately from the orientation, modeled by equations of motion
(cid:28)t to the kite speci(cid:28)c aerodynamics. The utilized sensors are an Inertial Measurement
Unit (IMU), an anemometer measuring the kite air path speed in (cid:29)ight direction, an-
gular sensors measuring the tether angles at the ground and a rotary encoder returning
the winching speed and length of the tether. All approaches also try to estimate the
bias of the turn rate sensor as well as wind speed and direction at (cid:29)ight level.
The estimators are implemented and evaluated in Matlab. For integration and solution
of the MHE optimization problem the Matlab interface of the ACADO code generation
tool is used. The evaluation is based on simulated data disturbed by arti(cid:28)cial measure-
ment noise as well as on a real data set obtained from an experimental (cid:29)ight. On the
simulated data the estimators yield satisfying results. Yet, the MHE implementation
shows divergence problems at speci(cid:28)c points of the trajectory. However, as this imple-
mentation is only a (cid:28)rst approach, it is to early for a concluding assessment. On the
real(cid:29)ightdatasetallestimatorsseemtoperformwell,butitishardtode(cid:28)nitelydecide
which approach is superior, as there is no reliable reference to compare to. During the
trajectory parts characterized by slow dynamics the models might loose observability
problem, which has to be further examined in future work.

Kurzzusammenfassung
Klassische Windkraftanlagen lassen gro(cid:255)e Teile des Potentials von Windenergie un-
genutzt, da sie in der H(cid:246)he beschr(cid:228)nkt sind, w(cid:228)hrend Windst(cid:228)rke und -verl(cid:228)sslichkeit
i.A. mit der H(cid:246)he zunehmen. Au(cid:255)erdem ben(cid:246)tigen sie einen massiven Einsatz an Ma-
terial. Flugwindkraftwerke versprechen beide dieser Probleme zu l(cid:246)sen, indem sie die
Rotorbl(cid:228)tter klassischer Windkraftanlagen durch (cid:29)iegende Systeme ersetzen, die durch
ein Seil mit dem Boden verbunden sind (Airborne Wind Energy Systems). Das Un-
ternehmenSkySailsverfolgtdenAnsatzmittelsSoftkiteseineSeilwindeauszurollen, an
der ein Generator angeschlossen ist. Um diese Systeme gro(cid:255)r(cid:228)umig einsetzen zu k(cid:246)n-
nen, m(cid:252)ssensievollautonomgeregeltwerden. Grundlagef(cid:252)reinensolchenRegelungist
eine verl(cid:228)ssliche Sch(cid:228)tzung wichtiger Gr(cid:246)(cid:255)en, wie Position und Orientierung des Kites
sowie Windgeschwindigkeit und -richtung auf Flugh(cid:246)he.
Die vorliegende Arbeit besch(cid:228)ftigt sich mit dem Design und der Bewertung solcher
Sch(cid:228)tzer. Dazu werden drei Filteralgorithmen implementiert: Extended Kalman Filter
(EKF), Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) und erste Versuche mit Moving Horizon Esti-
mation (MHE). EKF und UKF sind rekursive Algorithmen gleicher Struktur, w(cid:228)hrend
MHE mehrere vergangene Messwerte betrachtet und versucht f(cid:252)r diese die wahrschein-
lichste Trajektorie zu (cid:28)nden, indem f(cid:252)r jeden Zeitschritt ein Optimierungsproblem
gel(cid:246)st wird.
F(cid:252)r das Modell werden drei verschiedene Ans(cid:228)tze gew(cid:228)hlt. Die ersten beiden basieren
auf Integration der Drehraten, wobei beim ersten die Orientierung des Systems durch
Eulerwinkel ausgedr(cid:252)ckt und beim zweiten durch Quaternionen. Der dritte Ansatz
erweitert den zweiten durch zwei Eulerwinkel, um die Position getrennt von der Ori-
entierung auszudr(cid:252)cken. Als Sensoren werden eine inertiale Messeinheit, ein Seil-
winkelsensor (am Boden) sowie ein Drehgeber, der sowohl die Geschwindkeit der Seil-
winde als auch die Seill(cid:228)nge ausgibt, verwendet. Alle drei Ans(cid:228)tze versuchen au(cid:255)erdem
den O(cid:27)set der Drehratenmessung sowie die Windgeschwindigkeit und -richtung auf
Flugh(cid:246)he zu sch(cid:228)tzen.
DieSch(cid:228)tzerwerdeninMatlabimplementiert,wobeif(cid:252)rdieIntegrationsowiedasL(cid:246)sen
der MHE-Optimierungsprobleme das "ACADO code generation tool" verwendet wird.
Der Vergleich der Algorithmen wird sowohl auf einem simulierten Datensatz als auch
auf einem Datensatz, der w(cid:228)hrend eines experimentellen Fluges aufgezeichnet wurde,
durchgef(cid:252)hrt. Auf dem simulierten Datensatz liefern alle Sch(cid:228)tzer zufriedenstellende
Ergebnisse. Allerdings zeigt die MHE-Implementierung Divergenzprobleme bei bes-
timmten Punkten der Trajektorie. Da es sich nur um erste Ans(cid:228)tze handelt, ist es zu
fr(cid:252)hf(cid:252)reineabschlie(cid:255)endeBewertung. AuchaufdemexperimentellenDatensatzliefern
alle Sch(cid:228)tzer zufriedenstellende Probleme. Allerdings ist es schwer hier eine de(cid:28)nitive
Entscheidung zu tre(cid:27)en, da es keine verl(cid:228)ssliche Referenz gibt. W(cid:228)hrend der Teile
der Trajektorie, die durch langsame Dynamiken gekennzeichnet sind, scheint das Mod-
ell die Beobachtbarkeit zu verlieren. Dies muss in zuk(cid:252)nftigen Arbeiten gr(cid:252)ndlicher
untersucht werden.
