PREAMBLE
Quick and effective communication among stake holders is essential for progress of any
organisation. NIT Rourkela is no exception. Students, faculty, supporting staff need to
communicate among themselves and with persons outside the institute-other organisations,
alumni, parents of students, prospective students and employees, Government officials and
public. A smart and comprehensive communication system consisting of letter mail, e-mail,
telephone, fax and mobiles is essential. The quality of this system is the hallmark of a great
institution.
NIT Rourkela, a premier engineering Institute of our country has established an extensive and
efficient communication infrastructure. We have set up high speed campus-wide computer
networks which can be reached from every Lab, hostel room or residential quarters. To use this
facility effectively, we need a directory of telephone numbers and email addresses which is widely
available. It is our pleasure to present to the NITR community to sister institutions and to public at
large this “Communication Handbook” which provides physical and electronic addresses of every
one in campus. We have also tried to supplement this booklet with other frequently-used contacts
for the benefits of the NITR community.
It is our earnest hope that the new directory will be helpful to all users. In addition to making a
phone call or sending an email, users are requested to use the special features of our telephone
and email systems. In case of any difficulty, please do not hesitate to call Mrs. K. P. Dasmohapatra
at the Telephone Exchange or the System Administrator in the Computer Centre.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE AT TELEPHONE EXCHANGE
The Telephone Exchange-Our internal telephone network is supported by a modern telephone
exchange based on “AASTRA, MX-ONE SERVER”. The Mode DID exchange can handle 10, 000
lines.The present capacity of the exchange is 500 IP and 1800 analog extensions covering academic
buildings, Hall of Residences and residential areas. The telephone exchange is housed in the institute
main building located in the academic area and another sub-exchange housed in the Estate office.
Calling Internal Number-Four digit telephone numbers listed in this directory are internal (EPABX)
numbers. Numbers starting with 2, 3, 4, or 5 can be accessed directly from outside the institute
through Direct Inward Dialling (DID) facility by dialling 0661-246XXXX within India or by dialling
[phone]XXXX from abroad, where XXXX is the four digit telephone number listed in this book
Dialling Outside-One can dial any telephone number outside the campus by dialing ‘0’ followed by
the desired telephone number, listening to external dial tone after dialling ‘0’.
Call Transfer-When you are in conversation with a person ‘A’ and you wish to transfer the call to
person ‘B’, simply press FLASH/ recall button followed by 4 digit extension number of ‘B’ without
replacing the receiver. If you hear an ENGAGED sound, ignore it. But in IP phone press the line 2
button and get the dial tone then dial the extension no of ‘B’ then press the transfer key.
Call Back-When you call a person and find the number busy, dial ‘6’ get a tone and replace the
receiver. You will get automatic ring back as soon as the desired line becomes free.
Call Forward-You can forward all calls made to your number to another telephone number by dialling
*21* Extension no #.You can cancel the call forward by dialling #21#.
Wake up call (Alarm)-If you want a wakeup call dial 5998 and follow the IVR (interactive voice
response).
Conference Call-To set up a conference call between multiple parties, first Dial the first number.
When you are in conversation, FLASH DIAL the second no.You can add other number by FLASH
DIALING new number and finally dial 3. Only 6+1 party conference can be established for both
internal and external.
Call pick up-This is a facility given to a group, where any one can pick up a call made to another.
When you hear the other phone is ringing, pick up your receiver and dial 8. The telephone number
consisting the group need to be registered accordingly in the exchange in advance. But in case of
individual call pick up, when you hear the ring tone of other phone, pick up your receiver and dial the
ringing extension number. If you will get the busy tone then dial 8.
STD Locking-STD facility can be locked by dialling *76*pw# (pw=Password) and the facility can be
unlocked by dialling #76*pw#. Please make a written request to the telephone exchange if you forget
your password.
Operator Assistance-To reach the telephone exchange call 4999/5999 during working hour.
FAX Service-Fax message can be received in our telephone exchange in the number
[phone]. Recipient may collect the printed message in person from the exchange during
working hour.
