Foreword
In 1961, Friedrich Kainz, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Vienna, published a 322­page book, Die "Sprache" der Tiere, within the compass of which 
he comfortably managed to fit all available data pertinent to his inquiry. Furthermore, he also indulged himself in a restless activity much beloved by Teutonic 
academics of those times, untranslatably called Problemschau, as well as a fair measure of polemic theorizing, suggestively epitomized by quotation marks confining 
the word "language" in his title. Thus, less than a quarter of a century ago, the speculative era of animal communication studies came to a neat culmination, while their 
empirical pursuit was already being vigorously embarked upon, in many workshops on both sides of the Atlantic, mainly as a part of comparative psychology and 
ethology.
These empirical researches drew variously upon several branches of the natural sciences, for instance, acoustic physics, the diverse life sciences, of course, and the 
cycle of semiotic disciplines, the latter leading to the coinage as far back as 1963 of the convenient one­word nominal designation "zoosemiotics." This, in turn, 
spawned a family of new terms, such as "anthroposemiotics," contrastively referring to man's total—nonverbal and verbal—communicative repertoire, and the novel 
heuristic brainchild ''phytosemiotics," which already has elicited scientific studies on the arguably lively nonverbal communication of plants.
By 1965, an internationally manifested need persuaded the Wenner­Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research to convene the first Symposium on animal 
communication, with seventeen participants, in Burg Wartenstein, Austria. The resulting essays and discussions were published in two books and separately, e.g., in 
Science, late in that decade. In 1968, one of the undersigned edited, for the Indiana University Press, the first reference work ever to appear on the subject, Animal 
Communication: Techniques of Study and Results of Research. This ran to 686 pages, and appeared later, in full or in part, in several other languages as well. The 
book rapidly sold out, but the demand for it continued and the Press sought to reprint it. However, the "field"—for that is what it had grown into—had in the meantime 
experienced such rapid global development that, in our judgment, the preparation of an entirely fresh reference tool had become necessary. Hence How Animals 
Communicate was published, by the same Press, in 1977; this version was 1,128 pages in length, yet even then was far from all­encompassing.

By 1980, when How Animals Communicate was nearly sold out, the scope of animal communication studies had become so vast that no single compendium could 
do it justice. The Press therefore decided, upon the recommendation of the undersigned, to launch a series of separate books, by the world's leading authorities on 
animal communication, each of which would not only report the latest research but also summarize everything that is known about the communicative behavior of a 
particular species or grouping of species. The selection of species to be covered in this new series—simply entitled Animal Communication—would obviously 
depend upon the current availability of scientific information about different animals, but the format of the series would provide the flexibility needed to achieve its 
ultimate goal of representing most of the millions of animal species that inhabit the earth.
Whether about dogs, fireflies, or elephants, books in the series are written in a jargon­free style, with all specialized terms clearly defined, so that, while of high 
scientific value, they will be accessible to a wide variety of readers from various related disciplines as well as to interested persons from outside the academic world. 
Comprehension is further enhanced by a rich selection of photographs and drawings, and a selective bibliography as a guide to further study.
Fritz R. Walther's excellent book, Communication and Expression in Hoofed Animals, opens the Animal Communication series with a vivid account of the 
communicative patterns of an impressive variety of even­ and odd­toed ungulates. Professor Walther is one of the world's leading experts on ungulate behavior and 
this book, the fruit of years of careful and painstaking empirical study, will no doubt prove to be a vital contribution to man's understanding of the lives of hoofed 
animals. The author brings to his work the keen and finely honed powers of observation of the best of detectives as well as those of a fine artist. Through his clear, 
concrete reports of ungulate communication by tactile, olfactory, visual, and auditory means in natural and quasi­natural conditions, Professor Walther succeeds in 
sharing with us the excitement of decoding the seemingly mysterious gestures, movements, sounds, and other expressions of horses, deer, antelopes, and many other 
fascinating creatures. A labor of love as well as a disciplined scientific exercise, this book allows the reader to achieve, through acquaintance with accurate and 
objective empirical facts, a deeper appreciation and admiration for the unique and complex ways in which hoofed animals exchange information with one another and 
with other animal species in their environment.

A wise man once said that an author, when writing the preface to his book, should spend less time trying to convince the readers of the objectivity of his approach 
toward the subject, and more time giving them some information about his very subjective background, since this may contribute much more to their understanding of 
the book than anything else. The more I later learned about scientific and philosophical literature, the more convinced I became that this man was right. Since I intend 
in this preface to follow his advice, I now have to make a few "confessions."
To put it in a nutshell: I am an animal lover, a painter and photographer, a concretist and empiricist, and, at least occasionally, a pedant, and in my case, all these points 
are closely linked with each other.
Being an animal lover, my approach toward animals is not principally different from that toward foreign humans. I wish to learn and to know their names, what country 
they come from, and, above all, what they look like and what they do. If possible, I try to live with them for some time and to learn their language—and the "language" 
of animals is their expressive behavior.
Love is always limited to relatively few objects. Therefore, I mistrust people who say they are enthusiastic about the entire animal kingdom. There are about one 
million recent species, and I doubt whether such an inflation of love and enthusiasm is psychologically possible in one human. At least it is not for me. Although I realize 
that there are many fine animals in this world, deep in my heart I believe that true animals have horns or at least hooves, and my devotion primarily belongs to them. 
This goes back to the days when I was a boy, and—as with all true love—I cannot tell how I came to it.
Likewise, I cannot say how I came to draw and to paint. I always enjoyed it, although quite a number of my art products did not turn out as beautifully as I had 
intended. However, I draw animals not to compete with Leonardo da Vinci but to make sure that I have seen them correctly. As one of my anatomy teachers phrased 
it: you have only seen something when you have made a sketch of it.
Because I liked hoofed mammals so much, I made many drawings of them, both in zoological gardens and in the wild. In the course of time, however, I became 
somewhat tired of sketching them as they stood, grazed, or rested, and began to look for more special postures and movements. This was my path to the study of 
behavior. For a
