ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia date to the early
days of the oldest universities. A
statute of 1312 required that all
doctors, licentiates and bachelors of
the University of Coimbra, Italy, wear
gowns. The shape and size of the
American hood marks the college
degree of the wearer. It is possible to
recognize the college or university
from which the degree was
obtained by identifying the colors
on the center of the hood. Gowns
for master’s degree holders have
elongated sleeves, while doctoral
gowns have velvet striping on the
sleeves and down the front.
Hoods from the National College
of Natural Medicine are green and
white for all degree programs:
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine;
Doctor of Science in Oriental
Medicine; Master of Science in
Oriental Medicine; Master of
Acupuncture; Master of Science
in Integrative Medicine Research;
Master of Science in Nutrition; and
Master of Science in Global Health.
Dual-degree recipients wear the
hood of the doctoral degree and
a gold cord in recognition of their
master’s degree.

Honoring Uncle Ben
Lauren and Helen Lust, identical twins and
nieces of Dr. Benedict Lust, the father of
naturopathic medicine in the United States,
were born December 28, 1925, in Butler,
New Jersey. The youngest of eight children,
the pair grew up in a home adjacent to the
Yungborn health resort operated by their
uncle. The Lust twins, their older brother
and five sisters, spent their entire childhood
in this unique environment, learning from
their uncle about health and nutrition. Even
as little girls they helped at Yungborn by
folding napkins and setting tables, and later
as teens, greeting guests and serving meals in
the dining hall.
After completing their educations, each twin married and built a home in Butler on former
Yungborn property. Lauren and Helen, now Proctor and Ebers respectively, both had four
children, each within one year apart and always a match in gender. When their children
were grown, the sisters started successful careers in sales. Helen was active in residential
real estate for more than 30 years, a pursuit she continues. Lauren spent 30 years with
World Book Enterprises, advancing from sales rep to division manager covering all of
central New Jersey.
Helen Ebers and Lauren Proctor—
the Lust twins—wish to thank
NCNM for recognizing Dr. Lust’s
important contributions to the study
of natural healing, and are honored
to attend graduation and to be
associated with their beloved uncle.
