About Collected Fiction
Robert Pierce Carson was born October 6, 1909 in Clayton, Washington. Carson was a novelist, and short story writer; and screenwriter. During World War II, Carson served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps making training films. His aide was a young actor named Ronald Reagan. Early in his writing career, Carson was known for his sharp wit, showcased in stories for The New Yorker and the The Saturday Evening Post. He was also the author of several books, including The Magic Lantern (1952), a fictionalized history of Hollywood. His serialized novel Aloha Means Goodbye, about a Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, appeared in The Saturday Evening Post in June 1941, six months before the actual attack. The story, inspired by his trip to Hawaii the year before, was the basis for the 1942 Humphrey Bogart movie, Across the Pacific. Carson became a sought-after screenplay writer; penning many classic movies from the later 30s, thru the 50s. He wrote A Star is Born; which he won an Academy Award in 1937 for best original story. Robert Carson died on January 19, 1983, Los Angeles, California at the age of 73. He was survived by his wife, the former Mary Jane Irving, who was a child actress during the silent film era.
