Special Memoriam
Dr. David L. Hall (a former dean and professor, College of Information Sciences
and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania)
initially began work with me as the coeditor on this book before his sudden passing
in December 2015. We were all deeply saddened and shocked by his untimely death.
Dave was a man of keen intelligence, deep wisdom, and had the gentle and kind
soul that many of us strove to be around. He was both a friend and mentor to us and
is greatly missed. Most of the chapters and authors of this book were influenced by
Dave in many different ways and were dedicated to his vision of research. Because
we are all elements of the mosaic he has left behind, it is our firm conviction to dedi-
cate this book in his memory and honor.

Dedication
For the past two years, my wife Judy has stayed strong and
persevered while dealing with cancer and chemotherapy while
I worked through various elements of this book. Today she is
cancer free and healed. Therein, I give thanks to this blessing
through this dedication. I dedicate this book to her amazing
faith, hope, and love that show through in her thoughtful actions.
After 36 years of marriage, the inner light of Christ that meld us
together into one still magnifies brightly and leads our paths.

Book dedications are always difficult because there are so many
people who play an important role. From my perspective, there
are three people, in addition to Dave Hall memorialized earlier.
First, my coeditor, without whose perseverance, guidance, and
friendship, I would not be writing this. Thank you, Mike. Second,
Dr. Richard D. Brecht, who recently retired from the University of
Maryland, College Park, Maryland. Dick has been a consultant to
me on many subjects, and my work on this book is a reflection of
his commitment to broadening one’s intellectual knowledge. Last,
but certainly not the least, I also need to recognize the support of
my wife, Sue. Her love, companionship, and understanding are
foundational to all of our successes together including this book.
