About the Authors
McKayMooreSohlberg,PhD,isanationallyrecognizedleaderinthefield
of traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. For the past 16 years she has
worked as a clinician, researcher, and administrator in the development of
programs to assist individuals with brain injury to reintegrate into the
community at maximal levels of independence. The types of intervention
programs that she has developed and about which she has conducted re-
search have become model programs adopted by rehabilitation centers
throughouttheUnitedStates,Canada,andEurope.Dr.Sohlbergalsohasa
wealth of experience in teaching other professionals and assisting agencies
tobemoreeffectiveintheirdeliveryofcommunityreintegrationservicesto
persons with brain injury. She has published numerous articles, chapters,
and manuals on managing cognitive impairments following neurogenic
insult.Dr.Sohlbergreceivedhermaster’sdegreeinSpeechandHearingSci-
ences and her PhD in Educational Psychology at the University of Wash-
ington.Currently,sheisanassociateprofessorintheCommunicationDis-
orders and Sciences program at the University of Oregon.
Catherine A. Mateer, PhD, is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist
with an extensive background in clinical assessment, clinical intervention,
andbothbasicandappliedresearch.Shehaspublishedover75articlesand
book chapters and two previous books relating to brain organization for
language, memory, and praxis, as well as to the assessment and manage-
ment of acquired disorders of attention, memory, and executive functions
in children and adults. Dr. Mateer is known internationally for her pio-
neering work in the rehabilitation of individuals who have sustained trau-
matic brain injury. She is also recognized for her basic research on brain
andbehaviorrelationshipsthroughtheuseofcorticalmappingtechniques,

electrophysiological studies, and studies of the neuropsychological effects
of focal brain lesions and specific neurological disorders. Dr. Mateer
receivedhermaster’sdegreeinCommunicationDisordersfromtheUniver-
sityofWisconsin,andherPhDinPsychologyfromtheUniversityofWest-
ernOntario.Currently,sheisaprofessorintheDepartmentofPsychology
and the Director of the Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology at the
University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada.

Preface
Itcannolongerbesaidthatcognitiverehabilitationisa“newfield.”Over
thelastdecade,andsincethepublicationofourfirstbookoncognitivere-
habilitation (Sohlberg & Mateer, 1989), substantial growth and develop-
ment has occurred. The last 2 years have brought the publication of many
new texts targeting the rehabilitation of individuals with acquired brain
injury.Inaddition,theresearchbasehasbroadened,thereisgreaterprofes-
sional consensus around terminology, the understanding of the theoretical
underpinnings of cognitive function has matured, and a wide range of
treatment approaches have been articulated. Although there are still many
importantunansweredquestions,thenatureofthequestionshaschanged.
The following questions aimed at the rehabilitation field illustrate the
complexity of the rehabilitation process from the perspective of cognitive
neuropsychology (Shallice, 2000):
· Can the operation of individual damaged subsystems or pathways
beimprovedbyretrainingonparticularinputstimuli–outputaction
pairings?
· How easily can a patient acquire and use novel action or thought
schemas, which will be required in a rehabilitation procedure?
· Willanewlyacquiredschemarequiringvoluntaryapplicationeven-
tually lead to effective automatic use?
Theseandrelatedqueriesareexamplesofkeyissuesweattempttoad-
dressinthisbookbasedontheliteraturetodate.Itisexcitingtoreviewthe
insights and possible frameworks for future research. We applaud the
efforts of cognitive psychologists as they provide detailed descriptions of
cognitive disorders and inform us about the flow of information. We also
share their frustrations at the difficulty involved in parsing out cognitive
componentsandevaluatingtheiramenabilitytochangewhentheyaredis-
