WelcometotheproceedingsofCloudComp2009.
Acomputingcloudismorethanacollectionofcomputerresources, becauseitpro
videsmechanismstomanagethoseresources. Inacloudcomputingplatform, software
is migrating from the desktop to the "clouds," promising users, at any time and
anywhere,accesstotheirprogramsanddata.
Thisyear, 44academic, industrial andstudentpapers from allovertheworld were
submitted,ofwhich 17wereacceptedasregular longpapers.Additionally, threewere
included asshortpapers onhottopics.TheProgram Committee appreciates thetime
andeffortalloftheresearchers putintopreparing theirpapers.Many thanks alsoto

Abstract. FEDERICAisaEuropeanprojectstartedinJanuary2008thatcre
atedascalable,Europe-wide,cleanslate,infrastructureto supportexperiments
onFutureInternet.Thekeyarchitecturalprincipleisvirtualizationbothincom
putersystems and in networkequipmentandcircuits.The project"slices" its
substratetooffer"virtualinfrastructures" (slices)madeofcomputingelements
and networkresources to researchers. The user may fully configure the re
sources, includingtheslicetopology.The slicescanbe seenas"cloud infra
structures",generalizingtheconceptof"cloudcomputing" andenhancingthat
of"InfrastructureasaService".Asectionelaboratesonthemainopenissues:
reproducibility, resource description, monitoring and mapping of virtual
resourcestothephysicalsubstrate.

1 Introduction
The FEDERICA project [1] has been devised to provide support and research on
currentand FutureInternettechnologiesand architectures. The projectis linked tothe
European FIRE initiative [2] and the European Future Internet Assembly [3]. Other
similarinitiativesexists worldwide, e.g. GENI [4] in the United Stated inEuropeand
AKARI [5]inJapan.
Such experimentation requires new environments that combine flexibility, a mini
mum set ofconstraintand full controlofthe environmentfor the researchers. Aclean
slate approach has been advocated by the GENI, which initially planned to build a
dedicated, new infrastructure.
The constant developments oftechnology in computing and in networks, coupled
with the virtualization capabilities allow a new approach, which leverage existing
infrastructures to create new ones. FEDERICA is built on top of the National Re
searchand EducationNetworks(NREN [6]) inEurope, which In the last years created
a strongmultidomainhybrid networkinfrastructure with advancedcapabilities. Virtu
alization technologies allow creating on this large physical footprint more than one
infrastructure and each ofthem appearing independent and isolated, eventually to the
wavelengthlevel.
The project adds to the basic networkresource (capacity) and networkfunctional
ities (e.g.switching,routing) computingelementsto createvirtual infrastructures with
rich functionalities.
