Clinical Applications of Linguistics to Speech-Language Pathology is a practical
guide that provides linguistically grounded approaches to clinical practice. It
introduces key linguistic disciplines and discusses how they form a basis for
assessment and treatment of individuals with communication differences or
disorders.
Written by experts in linguistics and communication disorders, each chapter
provides clinicians with a foundational understanding of linguistics as it applies
to spoken and signed languages and underscores the importance of integrating
linguistic theories into clinical decision-making. The book is divided into
two parts that focus on the applications of linguistics to speech and language
differences and disorders in both children and adults. The chapters cover the
full range of linguistic domains, including phonetics, phonology, morphology,
syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. Applications to a wide range
of populations, including childhood apraxia of speech, aphasia, dysarthria,
traumatic brain injury, and accent modification clients, are also discussed.
Many chapters include assessment and treatment resources that can be used by
practicing clinicians.

Naomi Gurevich, PhD, CCC-SLP, is Assistant Professor in the Department of
Communication Sciences and Disorders at Purdue University Fort Wayne, USA.
Her research interests combine her background in phonology with acquired
language disorders. She has previously authored two books in these areas.
Christopher M. Grindrod, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department
of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Purdue University Fort Wayne,
USA. His research focuses on investigating language impairments in aphasia,
and cognitive-communication disorders associated with right hemisphere brain
injury. He has published extensively in these areas for over 20 years.

Claudia I. Abbiati is completing her PhD in the Interprofessional Health
Sciences program at the University of Vermont, USA. Her research focuses
on speech sound development, differences, and disorders in neurodiverse
populations, including childhood apraxia of speech.
Roelien Bastiaanse is Professor Emeritus of Neurolinguistics at the Center
for Language and Cognition at the University of Groningen, the Nether-
lands. Her research focuses on cross-linguistic aspects of agrammatic aphasia
with an emphasis on verb production. She has developed many influential
assessment and treatment programs for aphasia in various languages.
Jessica R. Berry is Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech Pathol-
ogy and Audiology at South Carolina State University, USA. Her research
focuses on child language with an emphasis on the grammar of children
with Gullah Geechee heritage.
Stacy K. Betz is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders at Purdue University Fort Wayne, USA. Her research
focuses on identifying the most accurate measures for diagnosing language
impairments in preschool and elementary school age children.
Talia Bugel is Professor of Spanish in the Department of International Lan-
guage and Culture Studies at Purdue University Fort Wayne, USA. She
specializes in sociolinguistics and second language acquisition. She is a pro-
fessional translator and interpreter, working with English, French, Portu-
guese, and Spanish.
Michael S. Cannizzaro is Associate Professor in the Department of Com-
munication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Vermont, USA.
He investigates brain and behavior relationships in typical and brain-injured
populations. His research on discourse processing incorporates behavioral,
linguistic, computational, and neuroimaging methodologies.
Carl Coelho is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Speech, Language
and Hearing Sciences at the University of Connecticut, USA. He is widely
known for his research on discourse and communication disorders in adults
with traumatic brain injury.

Jennifer Cole is Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Northwestern
University, USA. Her research uses experimental and computational meth-
ods to study the sound structure of language. She was the founding General
Editor of Laboratory Phonology and a founding member of the Association
for Laboratory Phonology.
Kyomi D. Gregory-Martin is Associate Professor in the Department of
Communication Sciences and Disorders at Pace University, USA. She spe-
cializes in child language development with an emphasis on culturally and
linguistically diverse populations.
Christopher M. Grindrod is Assistant Professor in the Department of Com-
munication Sciences and Disorders at Purdue University Fort Wayne, USA.
His research focuses on investigating language impairments in aphasia, and
cognitive-communication disorders associated with right hemisphere brain
injury.
Naomi Gurevich is Assistant Professor in the Department of Communica-
tion Sciences and Disorders at Purdue University Fort Wayne, USA. Her
research interests combine her background in phonology with acquired lan-
guage disorders.
Allison Hilger is Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech, Language,
and Hearing Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA. Her
research investigates impaired speech production in motor speech disorders.
More specifically, she looks at how prosody is affected in neurological dis-
ease or impairment.
Lauren E. Kelley is a school-based Speech-Language Pathologist in Houston,
TX, USA. Her current clinical and research interests include language dep-
rivation, pediatric language disorders, sign language disorders, and aural re/
habilitation.
Heejin Kim is Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics
at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. She investigates
the acoustic and perceptual correlates of segmental and prosodic categories
in motor speech disorders and explores an optimal training protocol for
perceptual learning of dysarthric speech.
James McCann is Assistant Professor in the Department of Hearing, Speech,
and Language Sciences at Gallaudet University, USA. His research interests
include identifying language disorders in deaf children acquiring visual lan-
guage and identifying evidence-based practice for language instruction and
intervention with deaf children.
Janna B. Oetting is Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences
and Disorders at Louisiana State University, USA. Her research focuses on
language development and disorders across dialects of English to reduce dis-
parities in health and education among children. She is a Fellow of the
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Shivani Patel is Speech-Language Pathologist at Lucile Packard Children’s
Hospital, Stanford Children’s Health in Palo Alto, CA, USA. Her areas of
clinical expertise include autism spectrum disorder and related developmen-
tal disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, and early intervention.
David Quinto-Pozos is Associate Professor in the Department of Linguis-
tics at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. His research includes signed
language acquisition, developmental signed language disorders, constructed
action, signed language contact and language change, and signed-spoken
language interpretation.
Shaun R. Stephens is Speech-Language Pathologist at the Stern Center for
Language and Learning in Williston, Vermont, USA. He specializes in treat-
ing social cognition and discourse-level language impairments, and in using
hands-on and experiential learning among children and adults.
Jill Thorson is Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders at the University of New Hampshire, USA. Her
research focuses on the perception and production of prosody at different
stages in development, and how these early language processes impact suc-
cessful communication.
Shelley L. Velleman is Professor in the Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders at the University of Vermont, USA. Her research
focuses on speech sound development in typically developing children and
in children with motor speech disorders, including childhood apraxia of
speech.
