ISPLAY ABINETS
W
hen it comes to display cabinets, the case itself
can say as much about a woodworker’s skill as
it does about the items being displayed. This
is particularly true of classic pieces, like the four cabinet
styles presented in this section.
Starting small, the hanging wall case is ideal for displaying
small objects, and it can be customized for a variety of col-
lectibles. Next is a tabletop display case with a beveled glass
top and a pull-out drawer. This small but elegant case gives
you the option of making half-blind dovetails and lets you
try detail carving.
The contemporary cabinet is perfect for displaying larger
items with its open, understated appearance. And finally, the
curio cabinet combines glass panels and adjustable shelves
with dentil molding to create a distinctive look, whether you
build the full-size standing version or the small hanging
keepsake cabinet.

And building it gives you a chance to practice some classic woodworking techniques.

any people collect small items
such as thimbles, commemora-
tive coins, and small car
replicas. I don’t have any of those things,
but I have all sorts of wooden spools. So I
decided to build a display cabinet for
them. This case won’t hold larger col-
lectibles, but it also won’t take up much
space, so you can find a home for it in
just about any room of the house.
TECHNIQUES. The small size of the
project also gives you an opportunity to
practice a few time-tested woodworking
techniques on a smaller scale.
Those techniques include simple
rabbet/dado construction on the basic
box, and mortise and tenon joinery for
the door frame. A detailed description of
how to cut a mortise and tenon can be
found on pages 13-17.
MATERIALS. The case in the photo-
graph at right is made from 3/" red oak,

but cherry or any other hardwood will
do as well. You could also use pine,
without the decorative inlay, and with
either a natural or painted finish. The
oak case shown here was finished with
two coats of an antique oil finish.
Unless you’re an expert in making
inlaid marquetry, the best way to tackle
the veneer inlay is to buy it ready-made
from a specialty supplier (see Sources,
page 126). The 21/"-diameter inlay pic-

tured at right is made from painted wood
veneers that are fitted and glued to a
paper backing (see Shop Tip on page 12).
Remember, because pre-made inlay sizes
vary, be sure to have your inlay in hand
before laying out the scrollwork top.
OPTIONS. There are several simple
ways to customize this case design,
depending on your needs. If you won’t
be displaying spools, you could leave
the pegs off the shelves, or change the
number or positions of the shelves.
You could also replace the inlay with
a small clock, a circular picture frame, a
piece of decorative glass, or anything
else that will fit the design.
