WhentheCanadianInstituteofUkrainianStudies (CIUS) wasfounded in 1976,theUkrainiancommunityneeded to
respondtochallengesfromthreesources:1)atotalitarianSovietregimebentonsuppressingUkrainianculture,2)anindiffer-
entandattimeshostilepoliticalandintellectualestablishmentintheWest,and3)strongassimilatorypressuresamongsec-
ond-andthird-generationUkrainian-Canadians.Fortwenty-fiveyears,CIUShaspromotedUkrainianandUkrainian-Cana-
dianstudies,servedasaresourcecentreforbilingualeducation,andprovidedintellectualsupportfortheUkrainiancommu-
nity.
MuchhaschangedsincethefoundingofCIUS.TheSovietUnionhascollapsedandUkrainehasgaineditsindependence.
YettheInstitute’staskhasonlybecomelarger,morecomplex,andmorevital.CIUSisheavilyinvolvedinUkraine,notonlyin
helpingtoreshapethehumanitiesandsocialsciencesinthepost-Sovietera,butalsoinhelpingUkrainereformitslawsto
promotedemocracyandamarketeconomy.TheformerlyindifferentWesternacademicandpoliticalelitehasbecomeaneager
consumerofInstitutepublications,aswellasacooperativepartnerinavarietyofacademicendeavours.AndUkrainian-
Canadians,mostofwhomnowbelongtothefourthandfifthgenerationinCanada,canrevitalizetheirUkrainianheritageby
drawingontheintellectualresourcescreatedbytheCanadianInstituteofUkrainianStudies. Dr. Zenon E. Kohut
