PREFACE
The shortageofeditions suitablefor amodern readership isat least asserious for Cicero as
for any other major ancient author. It restricts access specially to the philosophical works
but also, more surprisingly perhaps, to the speeches. The present volume is the first of a
number commissioned by the publishers with a viewto filling sorne ofthe gaps, and 1am
greatlyindebtedto Messrs. Aris&PhillipsLtd for their interestand encouragement.
1hope that, in appearing first in the series, Tuscu/ans 1will be seen as a symbol,
recalling the dominant position in Cicero's output which his writings on philosophy
occupiedfor centuries, and also asprovidingagood introductionto hislarger philosophical
works through itssemi-popular-but perfectlyserious-approach. Given Cicero's, and my
own, intended audience, 1 have had no difficulty in following the modern fashion for
confining commentary largely to straightforward explanation of the subject matter,
eschewing the once customary Iists of parallel passages and citations of monographs and
articles which few readers could, and even fewer would, consult. But 1have given sorne
indicationofparallelswhich show how extensively Cicero drew arguments and illustrations
from stock, and also of recent specialist studies which reveal the complexity of the Greek
philosophicaltraditionwhich Cicero drew onand ofhisrelationshiptoit.
