Warner Lawson, Sr. (1903197 1) served at Howard University,
Washington, D.C., as Dean of the School of Music, Dean of the
College of Fine Arts and distinguished Director of the Howard
University Choir. The author had the privilege of serving with him for
many years as Associate Director of the choir. I pay special tribute to
Warner Lawson, Sr., who first encouraged me to pursue a career in
music as choral conductor and teacher.
May I express my profound gratitude to Dr. James Thomas Holliday,
Associate Professor of Music, Howard University, Washington, D.C.,
who gave unstintingly of his time as chief research assistant and who
supervised the preparation of manuscripts for both the first (1981) and
second editions. His unfaltering support, critical judgment and
encouragement were essential to the completion of this research
project.
I owe a special debt of gratitude to Dr. Lorraine A. Williams, Vice
President for Academic Affairs (retired) Howard University,
Washington, D.C., and former Chairman of the Department of
History, who first encouraged me to apply for a University Grant to
subsidize my early research in choral music by African American
composers. Through the years, her support has remained tangible and

The author gratefully acknowledges the immeasurable contributions,
personal sacrifices and rare dedication of the Evelyn White Chamber
Singers (formerly Evelyn White Chorale), who for many years
performed choral music representing a broad spectrum of styles. This
group gained special recognition, however, for performing unfamiliar
and commissioned works by African American composers.

gift from the Evelyn White Chamber Singers designated to support the
