With continued success comes change and
newideas.AlongwiththefaceliftsofCarnegieHall
andHonakerFieldcameanewpresidenttowrapup
Maryville's"totalpackage."Dr. GeraldW. Gibson's
inauguration as the tenth president of Maryville
CollegewasheldonOctober23, 1993. Anaccom-
plishedchemistryprofessorandformervice presi-
dentanddeanfromRoanokeCollegeinVirginia,Dr.
Gibson isoriginallya South Carolina nativewhere
heearnedanundergraduatedegreeinChemistryat
Wofford College.
Tofurtherquenchhis"thirstforknowledge,"he
latercompleted his Ph.D. atthe UniversityofTen-
nessee. In connection with Dr. Gibson's outstand-
ing professional achievements, he is also a proud
fatherand husband to a wonderful wife and three
children.Withoutquestion, Dr.Gibsonisanexcep-
tionaladditiontotheMaryvillefamily. "Igivethanks
for the great honor of being chosen to serve this
unique college at this point in its history." Those
wordsweredistinctsymbolsofgratitudeexpressed
bythemanthatwillassistMaryvilleinitsstruggleto
continueexcellenceforyearstocome.

versary. Humphrey's Court is the landscaped
areabetweenAndersonHall,FayerweatherHall,
and the CCM that was refurbished and re-

Diane's parents, Bernice and Edward
Humphreys Sr. were actively involved with
MaryvilleCollege. Bernicewasamemberofthe
Board of Directors and was involved in other
statewide educational organizations. Edward
activelysupportedtheCollegebutdedicatedhis
lifeto aflowerbusinessthat he began. Forthis
reason Dianethoughtaflowergardenwouldbe
appropriateandfittingforthememoryofparents
whosolovedflowers. Becausethe Humphreys
gave of themselves in many ways to the Col-
lege, a charitable trust was established that
eventuallyleadtohelpingwiththerenovationof
the library.
SpeakersatthededicationincludingDiane
Humphreys-Barlow, Ellie Morrow, Jenny
Cummings, Dr. Harry Howard, and Richard E.
Ragsdale spoke of the contributions of this
family, aswell asofthe importance ofgivingto
theCollege.Uponthededicationofthearea,Dr.
Gibsondeclaredthestartofthe175thyear,and
the anniversary celebration had begun.
