Preface and Acknowledgements
This volume presents a selection of the papers delivered at the Fifth
Roman Family Conference, 'Secret Families, Family Secrets', which
look place in June 2007 in Fribourg (Switzerland). The conference,
hold for the first time in Europe, assembled specialists from different
academic and cultural traditions: American, Australian, Belgian,
I'innish, French, German, Italian, and Swiss.
Thanks are due to a number of institutions for their generous
financial support which made the conference possible: the Swiss
National Sciences Foundation, the Swiss Academy of Humanities
and Social Sciences, and the Département des Sciences de l'Antiquité
