SERIES PREF ACE
The United Nations' designation of 1979 as the International Year of
the Child marked the first global effort undertaken to heighten awareness
of the special needs of children. Activities initiated during this special
year were designed to promote purposive and collaborative actions for the
benefit of children throughout the world. Michigan State University's
celebration of the International Year of the Child was held from Septem
ber 1979 through June 1980. A variety of activities focused attention on
the multiplicity of factors affecting the welfare of today's children as
weIl as the children of the future. Many people involved with the
university were concerned that benefits to children continue beyond the
official time aIlocated to the celebration. The series Child Nurturance is
one response to this concern. The first five volumes of Child Nurturance
reflect directly the activities held on the Michigan State University
campus and consist of original contributions from guest speakers and
invited contributors. Subsequent biennial volumes will present original
contributions from individuals representing such fields as anthropology,
biology, education, human ecology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, and
medicine. We hope the material presented in these volumes will promote
greater understanding of children and encourage interdisciplinary inquiry
into the individual, family, societal and cultural variables which influence
their welfare and development.
We would like to express both our thanks and our admiration for
Margaret Hall who not only typed the camera-ready copy for each of the
volumes, but also served as general manager of the entire project.
Although her contribution to the production of these volumes will not be
noted in any chapter headings or indexes, each page reflects her devotion,
care, and hard work. We also thank Mary Ann Reinhart for her careful
and scholarly preparation of the subject index. FinaIly, we thank the
editors and authors for their cooperation and for their concern for
children and their families.

PREFACE
Child Nurturing in the 1980s follows upon aseries of lectures
presented at Michigan State University in conjunction with the uni
versity's celebration of the International Year of the Child. The chapters,
although far from an inc1usive set, outline childrearing perspectives,
issues and concerns relevant to the 80s and beyond. The authors have
used different styles ranging from empirical review to essay.
The book is designed to provide those concerned with the nurturing
of children in the United States with perceptions of what is and what
could be. The initial chapter by Edward Zigler sets the stage for
comments related to specific areas and modalities of child nurturing
concerns for the decade. Some of the chapter authors are more futuristic
than others in their perspective, but all have focused upon issues judged to
be focal for those concerned with the nurturing of children in this culture
during this period of our history •
The book is not addressed specifically to those who would set policy
or those who would implement it. Rather, it is hoped that it can be read
with benefit by a wide range of individuals inc1uding but not limited to
parents, faculty members, child care workers and child agency personnei.
The editors wish to extend our appreciation to many individuals who
made this effort possible. Funding of the IYC program was provided
through the International Year of the Child Committee under the most
able leadership of Andrew D. Hunt, M.D. The IYC lecture series, from
which several chapters were drawn, was developed by the Child Nurturing
and Development Committee which inc1uded Robert Boger, Pat Barnes
McConnell, Hiram Fitzgerald, Carol Fredrickson, Patricia Gage, Kay
Ingram, Lawrence Lezotte, Lucetta Lyford, Pat Malony, John Mullins,
Lilian Phenice, Richard Richter, Mark Roosa, and Marcia Rysztak.
The IYC child nurturing lectures would have been impossible without
the dedicated efforts of Eileen (Beany) Tomber, whose efficient manage
ment made the series possible. We would also like to extend appreciation
to Hiram F itzgerald and Marjorie Kostelnik, the Child Nurturance Series
editors, for their patience and support in assisting us with this volume, as
well as Margaret Hall, Carolyn Boyd and the staff of the Institute for
F amily and Child Study at Michigan State University, for their assistance
in the editing and typing of the manuscript.

viii PREFACE
From our perspective, Httle is more important than the nurturing of
our children. The economic stress on families, as well as the scope and
rate of sodal and technological change in our sodety, make the nur
turance of America's children a true challenge for the 19805. It is our
sincere hope that this volume will be of assistance to parents and
professionals involved with this most important of functions.
