A Study on the Process of Adaptation and Inculturation of the Gospel
in Native American Community

The third millenium is being inaugurated and, along with the new millenium,
enormous changes—megatrends—are occurring. Until recently this was a
Europe-centered unitary world, but it has changed into a world where all countries
participate. This means that Europe-centered culture and history and the traditional
mission method of European countries can no longer influence mission today. A new
cultural consciousness and dialogue between religions, and religious pluralism, are the
subject or motive of mission.
Responding to this reality, the World Council of Churches has sought out new
missionary attitudes and actions in concrete ways. The new mission focus does not
depend upon a consciousness of God that is confined by traditional church doctrines, but
depends on God’s love and action of salvation that calls all peoples as His, equally. This
concern for mission and evangelism is the new missionary consciousness.
The project proposes a new consciousness of mission for today—one that would
start from one common consciousness of all lives existing on earth. Among peoples who
have lived out a life style based on this consciousness are Indians, the Native Americans.
To seek out the grounds of this consciousness, the project researches the relationship
between Native American spirituality and the Gospel.
Chapter 2 deals with the substance of Native American spirituality expressed in
myths and ceremonies. Chapters 3 and 4 deal with the history of Native American

mission Christianity and the process of adaptation and inculturation of the Gospel into the
Native American community. Chapters 5 and 6 propose Native American spirituality as
an alternative plan to solve the environmental crisis of the earth. Discussions also seek
out grounds of theologizing Native American spirituality through the viewpoints of
Korean indigenous theology and the interrelationship between the Gospel and Native
American spirituality.
In conclusion, the project suggests a Native American Theology of Life that is
based on Native American spirituality. This is not a theology restricted to an ivory tower,
but a practical theology that can solve the environmental crisis of the earth. Finally, it is
also a mission theology that can lead the future mission of Christianity into a new
direction.
