Passionate about literacy, learning, and
architecture, I launched my first Kickstarter
campaign on September 9, 2013 to build a
Little Free Library in my community. Thirty-six
hours after the Kickstarter project went live, it
was featured as â??Staff Pick: Project of the
Dayâ?? and achieved its funding goal within 8
hours. The campaign was successfully funded
on October 9, 2013 by 65 generous backers!
We finished and installed our structure on
December 11, 2013 and have named our library
"Skookum Reads!" We've also created a blog
dedicated to sharing resources on literacy,

The Bethlehem Lutheran Church Pre-

This little free library is located at Frontier
Texas, a museum and visitor center located in
downtown Abilene, TX. It was inspired by Tim
& Amy Salmon of Milwaukee, Wisconsin who
visited the museum in the spring of 2014 and
by the encouragement of the museum
director's wife, Deirdre. This LFL was built by
the museum's director from a discarded side
table built to resemble an antique ice box. The
initial books were donated by the museum's
volunteers. The official ribbon cutting

I built this myself over three weeks. My
husband gave helpful hints and only helped me
with the door. I am so excited about this
because I'm always driving into town to the
library and buying books from Friends of the
Library. This will be out in the country and I
look forward to exchanging books. I also love
giving books away to people for baby showers
and to my nieces and nephew and to friends at

Several months ago I saw a news story about a
LFL in the Atlanta area. I thought it was
wonderful and took the idea to my book club
CHiLLS. We decided we need something a little
bigger for our neighborhood. Julie Murphy and
I came up with what we wanted it to look like

The Friendship Connection, Inc. is an adult
Recovery Center that is peer-run, meaning it is
run by the very adults who comprise its
membership. Our mission, in part, is to be
charitable and educational, a "GREENHOUSE

Libraries in Addison. Our Little Free Libraries

located outside the Addison Park District's

Lochiel Park in the suburb of Campbelltown.

Our Little Library opened on June 8th, 2013. As
of the beginning of July, more than 30 readers
used it. We are 250 people living during the
summer time in our small community. We

Our library is in a neighborly community on
Grand Lake, Oklahoma. Inspired by a story
about Little Free Libraries in Rotary
International's publication, it was decided that
our community needed its own LFL. We
reinforced and improved a shelving unit in the
shape of a canoe, added weatherproofing and
began circulating books. We have a
tremendous number of weekend guests to our

The Wilson and Smeller families learned about
LFL from friends in Madison WI and decided to
undertake building one for our Riverwoods
neighborhood in Akron. We started by building
a cardboard model and then transferred the
final design measurements to wood. Among
our design features are a steel covered roof
made by a roofing contractor in Amish country
in Holmes County with donated labor. We
included plexiglass windows on two sides and
the front door of the library. The door is hinged
and held open with gas struts. The door is held
closed with magnets. The books we've
collected have come from neighbors and
school teacher friends as well as donations
from others who admire the idea. They include
books for kids and adults and are both fiction
and nonfiction. We're looking forward to
seeing how well it will be used and

redwood fence in our backyard, we decided
that a Little Free Library would be a perfect
reuse of the old wood and a great way to

After learning about the Little Free Library
movement, Shannon Haynes was amazed. As a
volunteer for Imagination Library of Crockett
County and lover of literature, Shannon
thought it would be amazing to have one for
young readers in Alamo, TN. She asked her
grandfather Tom Mooney to build one as her
Christmas present. He built a beautiful Little
Free Library and presented it Christmas of
2013. The Alamo City School board agreed to
have it located on their school campus and it

As someone who loves libraries, having a Little
Free Library was a birthday wish list item that
was fulfilled by my husband Paul and Daughter
Kayla. After buying the kit and painting it we
dedicated it and invited neighbors as well as
the staff of the Albany Public Library located
1.5 blocks from our home. 7 of the library staff
came, along with about 20 neighbors! We had
tea & biscotti, gave away bookmarks that I
designed, explained how the library works, and
had people leave comments in the "Library
Book" which includes a notebook and stickers.
People brought books to leave in the new
library and I'm excited to see it become a part
of the community. I also have a "Quote Tree"

I have always loved reading. My mother would

December 2012 The first time I saw an article
featuring a Little Free Library I decided that I
must have one in my yard. Our neighborhood is
the perfect place to make available books for
all ages. After asking my neighbor Roger if he
would build the library he went to work making
his own design to be modeled after our home.
His work was amazing and it will protect the
books shared through this Little Free Library for
many years to come. Because my liftime
passion is reading this is the perfect way for me

The LFL of Windsor and Dewitt (the first LFL in
Northern Virginia) is in a neighborhood lively
with pedestrian activity: people walking dogs,
pushing strollers, off to the Farmer's Market,
pausing to read poetry on the poetry fence
under a canopy of trees around the corner,
stopping to get a book from the LFL. Next to
the LFL, sweet cherry tomato plants grow, and

I love to give away books. I volunteer with
various programs that provide free books for
children, and I'm a longtime Bookcrosser
(www.bookcrossing.com). I had wanted a Little
Free Library from the moment I heard about
them, but I lack the skills to build one, and I
couldn't afford to buy one. Madeline, a
Bookcrosser in my local group, had just started
her own LFL; her husband Jose built it for her.
When she told Jose that I wanted one too, he
offered to build it. He even designed it to look
like my house! He and my husband installed it,
and LFL#9136 was in business. As soon as I
filled my new LFL with books, the neighbors
began stopping by to take and donate some.
Within a few days, it had become a popular
neighborhood fixture. Several times a week,
children knock on my door to request specific

Our Little Free Library is located at an outdoor
shopping center call Watters Creek at
Montgomery Farm. We decided to add it
because we have many families with children
that come to our green area to relax, play, or
listen to music, that it seem a perfect offering
to provide them with access to books.
We wanted the library design to fit in with the
area landscape that we chose to build it from a
fallen log. There is a matching bench to sit at if

The Mill Creek 4-H Club takes many adventures
throughout a 4-H year! This year, the 4-H
Leadersâ?? Association challenged area clubs
to participate in a countywide service learning
project to promote literacy. Therefore the Mill
Creek club took on a new adventure and
constructed four â??Little Free Libraries.â??
Deb and Randy Rotering( the leaders for the
club) organized the building and placement of
the libraries. They also led the project that has
been organized over the past 8 months. The

The Florecita Farm Little Free Library was built
by 94 year old Elmer Nielson. The glass door is
a 1920's era window from the Habitat for
Humanity Restore. The handle is made of
antique wooden thread spools. The library sits
in front of the Florecita Farm Store where
oranges and eggs were sold from 1920 until
1948 when the store was remodeled into a

After biking past three LFL's on a business trip
in Madison, WI, I asked my dad if he would
consider helping me build one of my own.
Being a retired Language Arts teacher, I have a
passion for sharing the gift of books. Always
being supportive of me, my dad took on this
project. He researched different LFL designs,
built a cardboard mock-up, sought out recycled
materials, and designed a schoolhouse to
honor my years as a teacher. My dad's creation
is wonderful and so appreciate the time and

This is the Friendly By Nature LFL with trim
painted brown. Notice all the critters including
frogs reading books to make it more fun for
little ones. The LFL has been up about 6 weeks
and is getting lots of use from neighborhood
kids. More use is anticipated once school is out
for the summer. Books are traded out weekly
and an extra tub of books is kept under the
bench because the library is so small. The LFL
has picture books including lots of Caldecott
winners - chapter books with lots of Newbery
winners - magazines - religious books - science
and history books - and anything else that

My daughter and I both volunteer at the local
public library. Setting up a Little Free Library
seemed like a natural extension of our
community involvement -- plus they are very

but on the edge of our campus. Here it is

Our town started asking itself why LFLs were
only located in "better" parts. We challenged
ourselves to make Little Free Libraries available
wherever there are kids, and especially kids
with fewer resources than others. This is the
first of others LFLs to be planted in low-income
neighborhoods and trailer parks in the Ames
area. It is located directly outside the
transitional housing program of our homeless
shelter, where families stay for a year while

My Little Free Library was built entirely from

projects. I built it so that folks traveling our
neighborhood, and most certainly my
immediate neighbors, could all have the
opportunity to browse and trade books, or

Everything except for the brass hinges, the
glass eyes in the sun, and the solar lights was
salvaged from scrap materials from local
construction. I made the glass door from a
broken picture frame and some scrap
decorative glass from another project. The
base was made from material salvaged from a

A day doesn't go by that I am not handling
books...either at work in a public library or
reading to my son or myself. I wholeheartedly
believe in the magic of stories. We learn about
ourselves and others from characters in books
and we can enjoy an escape to another
location through books. I am extremely fond of
cozy mysteries set in small towns or English

about all reclaimed materials and finds itself in
our walkable, tree lined Burns Park
neighborhood. We focused on keeping it within
the character of our home and the surrounding
homes in our neighborhood. Just a few blocks
from the campus of the University of Michigan,
lots of people (students, kids, professors, and
vagabonds) can be found walking by our home
daily. As for the library, outside is weathered
barn wood that has been left in it's natural
condition with a little varnish to protect it.
Inside, salvaged oak plank flooring, pine
breadboard, and fine wood rafters can be
found. A chalkboard for quick messages and an
extra shelf help separate books. The exterior
door and windows are salvaged cedar and the
roof reclaimed cement board with our support
post a reclaimed post. Finally the wooden
handle on the door is from an old dresser that
was sitting around and fit perfectly
(compliments of Steve). Within 10 minutes of it
being settled in, we had neighbors dropping off
books and kids opening the door to explore.
We hope people find it a happy place where
our community can continue to share the love
of reading we all have and explore the diverse
