PREFACE
This character text corresponds^ part for part^ to
the romanized text in Speak Cantonese by Parker Huang and
Gerard P. Kok (Mirror Series A-50^ Institute of Far Eastern
Languages^ 1960)
It can be used by the Chinese teacher^ who usually
reads much more easily in characters than in romanization,
and for the student^ who wants. to learn to read.
Since this is a conversational book of the Cantonese
dialect^ the character text will look strange to the ordinary
reader of Chinese. A number of characters and expressions are
limited to the Cantonese dialect^ necessitating the 'coining'
of some new characters. The sentences are strictly colloquial
and do not follow the more stilted style of written Chinese.
The Chinese teacher in using this book for conver-
sational drill must be careful not to 'read-out' the sen-
tences -- that is^ he should read the sentence to himself
first and then say it in normal speed using spoken intonation.
Accompanying this text is a supplement containing
the character vocabularies with notes covering rules for
writing and the order of strokes given each new character.
