Since 1954the Regional Oral History Office has been interviewing leadingparticipants in orwell-placed
witnessestomajorevents inthedevelopmentofnorthernCalifornia,the West, andthenation. Oral history
is a method ofcollectinghistorical informationthroughtape-recorded interviews between anarratorwith
firsthand knowledge ofhistorically significantevents and awell-informed interviewer, withthe goal of
preservingsubstantiveadditions tothe historical record. Thetape recording is transcribed, lightly edited
forcontinuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is indexed, bound
with photographs and illustrative materials, and placed inThe BancroftLibrary atthe University of
California, Berkeley, and inotherresearchcollections forscholarly use. Because it is primary material,
oral history is not intendedtopresentthe final, verified, orcomplete narrativeofevents. It is a spoken
account,offeredbythe interviewee inresponsetoquestioning, and as such itis reflective, partisan, deeply
involved, and irreplaceable.
