THE COLLEGE
History of the Mount St. Mary's College
Foundedin 1925bytheSistersofSt.JosephofCarondelet,MountSt.Mary'sCollege
offers associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degree programs in the arts, sciences,
and selected professions. Housed on twobeautiful campuses,the College serves one
ofthemostdiversestudentbodiesinthenation.Baccalaureateprogramsareoffered
at the Chalon Campus inWest Los Angeles.Associate and graduate programs are
offered at the Doheny Campus on the historic Doheny estate near downtown Los
Angeles. Today, Mount St. Mary's is the only Catholic women's college west ofthe
Mississippi.
At Mount St. Mary's, education is a transforming experience. Students explore a

Student Affairs
TheDivisionofStudentAffairsisdedicatedtoeducatinganddevelopingstudentsso
that they may embrace a life-long commitment to learning and self-reflection and
enjoy satisfying and relevantlives ofleadership and service. Students onboth cam-
puses are invited to participate in a wide variety ofreligious, social and leadership
programsandavailthemselvesofservicesincareercounseling,on-campusliving,fit-
ness,andlearningsupport.Detailsoftheseservicesandactivitiesarecontainedwith-
inthe StudentAffairs sectionofthe baccalaureate program andthe StudentAffairs
sectionofthe associateprogram.
The Alumnae Association
TheAlumnaeAssociationsupportsthemissionandgoalsoftheCollegebystrengthen-
ingthe bondofloyaltybetweenthe College andits formerstudents.This relationship
ismaintainedbycommunications,continuingeducation,socialevents,andfundraising.
TheAlumnaeAssociationis amemberofthe CouncilforAdvancementand Support
ofEducation. Its members qualify for membership in the American Association of
UniversityWomen;theInternationalFederationofCatholicAlumnae;KappaGamma
Pi, the honor society for outstanding graduates from Catholic colleges; and Delta
Epsilon Sigma,honorsocietyforgraduates of Catholicuniversities andcolleges.
Degree Programs
Associate Degree Program
ThroughtheAssociateinArtsProgramstudentshavetheopportunitytodevelopaca-
demiccompetenciesandenhancetheirself-developmentthroughinvolvementonand
offcampus.Facultyandstaffofferexcellenceintheirspecializedfieldsandshowcon-
cernfortheindividual student.
CoursesofstudyareofferedwhichleadtodegreesinBusinessAdministration,Early
ChildhoodEducation,GraphicDesign,LiberalArts,Nursing,orPre-HealthSciences.
All students enteringtheAssociate Degree Program arerequiredto complete place-
menttestsinreading,writing,andmathpriortoregisteringforclasses.Foursemes-
ters are usually required to complete theA.A. degree; students with deficiencies in
mathematics orEnglish skills mayneedoneortwoadditionalsemesters.

Thisprogramisdesignedtopreparestudentsfortransfertoabaccalaureateprogram
ontheChalonCampusoranotherinstitutionordirectentryintoacareeraftergrad-
uation.
Associate Degree Nursing Program
The Associate Degree Nursing Program, located on the Doheny Campus, offers an
eveningprogramforworkingadultwomen and men leadingto anAssociate inArts

Baccalaureate Degree Programs
MountSt.Mary'sCollegeofferscoursesofstudyleadingtothedegreesofBachelorof
Arts, Bachelor ofMusic, and Bachelor ofScience. Primarilythese are offered at the
ChalonCampus.
Within the liberal arts tradition, the curriculum provides the student with a broad
and liberatingbackground in the arts and sciences, and aims at developinghis/her
abilitytocommunicateknowledgeandtoapplyappropriateprinciplesandtechniques
toparticularproblems.Duringthejuniorandsenioryears,thestudentspursuedeep-
erstudyintheirmajorareas ofconcentration andtakerelatedelectivecourses.
Weekend College
TheWeekendCollegeontheChalonCampusofMountSt.Mary'sCollegeisaninno-
vative approach to learning that provides working adults with the opportunity to
earntheBachelorofArtsdegreewithmajorsinLiberalArts,Sociology,Gerontology,
EnglishorEnglishandBusinessAdministrationandtheBachelorofSciencedegree
with a major in Business Administration. In four years students will earn their
degrees while continuing to fulfill their full-time obligations to their careers and
families.
TheWeekendCollegeisnotanacceleratedprogram.Instead,itis acompletecollege
experience,based ontraditional curriculawhose contenthas been organizedinnew
ways andthenredistributed sothatclasseswhichwouldtraditionallybe spreadout
evenly over a fifteen-week semester are concentrated into six intensive weekends.
Theseweekendsarenon-consecutiveandarescheduledinsuchawaythatthereisa
space ofat least two weeks, and usuallythree weeks, between each class weekend.
Adult students, even ifthey work full-time during the week and have, in addition,
family and personal obligations, are nevertheless able to perform comfortably and
successfullyiftheyhave developed areasonable degree ofmaturityandmotivation.
Thosewhotakethefull-timeloadofthreecoursespersemesterspendthewholeday
inclasses onbothSaturdayandSundayoneachofthe sixweekendsessions.
The program is designed forboth men and women, part-time orfull-time students,
andforthosewhobringwiththemtransfercreditsfromothercollegesaswellasstu-
dentswhoarejustbeginningtheircollegeeducation.Smallclassesaretaughtbythe
same teachers who exemplify Mount St. Mary's academic excellence. Students who

receive a four-year bachelor's degree from the Weekend College spend comparable
hours in the classroom,receive the same outstandingqualityofinstruction, and are
certified as possessingthe same high level ofknowledge and skills as the graduates
ofMount St. Mary'srenownedweekdaycollege.

Master's Degree Programs/ Teacher Preparation
Programs
Since 1931,thegraduatedivisionofMountSt.Mary'sCollegehasextendedanddeep-
ened the work ofthe undergraduate departments by offering to qualified men and
womentheopportunitytopursueadvancedcoursesandtoobtainprofessionalprepa-
ration.
Students may earn the degrees of Master of Science in Counseling Psychology,
Master ofArts in Religious Studies, and Master ofScience in Education with con-
centrations in Administrative Services, Elementary Education, Secondary
Education, and Special Education. IndividuallyDesigned MasterofScience degrees
inEducationmayalsobe developed.
The graduate division also offers courses that prepare the student for California
TeachingCredentials andforCaliforniaServices and SpecialistCredentials.
Certificate Programs
Gerontology
Gerontologyis the scientific study ofaging.The agingprocesses are studied mainly
fromtheaspectsofbiology,psychologyandsociology,butthereareaddedethical,reli-
gious,andhumanisticdimensions aswell.
The Certificate Program in Gerontologyat Mount St. Mary's College is designed for
studentstolearnabouttheagingprocess,theeldersinoursociety,andwaysofadapt-
ingtothechangesthatweallgothrough.Thisisamultidisciplinaryapproachwhich
offers a solid base for those who workwith the elderlyin service, health, church, or
political organizations - orwho areinterestedintheirownsuccessful aging.

Graduate Religious Studies
The units taken for certification in Pastoral Care/Counseling, Hispanic Pastoral
MinistryorYouthandYoungAdultMinistrymaybeappliedtowardcompletionofthe
Master's degree in Religious Studies or the Certificate of Advanced Religious
Studies. The certificate programs are described below.
