The study investigated the effects of note-taking and review on information retention from a lecture. 172 college students listened to a lecture and engaged in different study strategies involving note-taking and review. Their recall was tested immediately or one week later. Results showed that taking and reviewing notes led to the highest retention, while listening without review led to the lowest. The benefit of note-taking seems to come from having notes to review later, not just from the act of note-taking. Encoding differences based on note-taking were minimal, while having notes for external storage was most important.
