his story takes place a long time ago. around
the year 1839.
What was our country like then?
There were only twenty-six states in the United
States Most people lived on fauns arid in small
towns and cities in the East. But manv people were

moving to the new state of Michigan and even
farther est There were wild woods on this land,
and people had to clear away the woods to make
new hom-

How did people get to the West in those days?
They could ride part of the way in trains, but the
trains did not go very far into the wild country. So
the people had to ride on horseback and in covered
wagons. Steamboats took them down big rivers and
across lakes.
Caroline's adventures are the kind of adventures
that might have happened to a girl who lived long
ago, around the year 1839.
