Introduction
his book has been written to assist people
who want to get into the huge and grow-
ing field of private security. It is not a
nuts-and-bolts manual on how to per-
form security functions, but should be
used as a map of the industry to find out
where you fit in and to give you some
ideas about where you might like to go
next. Hopefully, it will save both you and
your prospective employer a lot of time
and trouble, not only when you are just
getting started but as you _ progress
though your career.
The private security industry includes
everything from one-man operations all
the way up through gigantic multination-
al corporations that earn billions of dollars
a year and employ hundreds of thousands
‘of people. Although I say this book will
help you find your place in the industry,
I’m actually only talking about the lower,

operational end of the spectrum, or jobs you might find at a
security company in a good-sized city. Once you get further up
the corporate food chain, the importance of knowing security
functions takes a back seat to the importance of knowing basic
business procedures. If you already have business experience
and a business degree, you don’t need any advice from me.
One thing I need to mention right away, though, and
something that needs to be emphasized: This book is about
private security. This means I am talking about security services
that are sold to buyers—in other words, business. The main
purpose of any business is to make money for the owners and
investors, not to provide the best possible service at any price
as it so often is with government and military security agen-
cies and departments.
Much of what you will read in this book comes from my
own hard-earned experience. I first became interested in pri-
vate security work 30 years ago, right after I got out of the
U.S. Army the first time. I’d joined the army right out of high
school and spent the next 10 years in Special Forces units
fighting the Vietnam War, so I was pretty naive about the
ways of civilian life and civilian jobs when I first reentered the
job market. Let me tell you a little story about my first private
security job.
After being discharged, I moved to Houston, Texas, and
spent two or three months goofing off. When my savings
were about gone I decided it was time to get a job. Police and
security work appealed to me not only because it sounded
like it might be exciting, but also because it was one of the
few areas of civilian employment that sounded vaguely like
what I had been doing in the army. I applied for several local
and federal law enforcement jobs, and while I waited for
results on those applications I took a look at the help wanted
section in the newspaper. As they are today, the want ads
were full of security jobs. I picked the company with the
biggest ad, stuck my DD 214 (the document that identifies a
veteran’s condition of discharge—honorable or otherwise) in
an envelope, and drove down to apply for work.
