Il volume conclude l'edizione critica, con traduzione e commento, degli Aitia del poeta greco Callimaco, di età ellenistica, facendo séguito al tomo pubblicato nel 1996, che riguardava i libri primo e secondo. Gli Aitia sono uno dei capolavori di Callimaco e rappresentano il manifesto di una nuova poetica: si tratta di una raccolta di elegie che indagano sull'origine (quasi sempre mitica) di nomi, usanze, tradizioni o culti, giunta fino a noi purtroppo in modo molto frammentario, tanto che una buona parte dei testi ci è nota grazie alle citazioni di altri autori ed a frammenti papiracei. Il terzo libro ha inizio con l'epinicio per Berenice e prosegue con l'elegia di Aconzio e Cidippe, che narra come i due giovani siano riusciti a sposarsi. Il quarto libro, dopo una invocazione alle Muse, contiene sedici Aitia, l'ultimo dei quali narra le vicende degli Argonauti. L'opera si conclude con l'elegia sulla chioma di Berenice.
