Call for papers of the special issue on
Animal Models and Infectious Diseases
Primates and animal models are major areas of coverage for Zoological Research (ZR). Over the past few
years, ZR has released a series of special issues/topics addressing various aspects of these areas, e.g., ge-
netics, immunology, and physiology neuroscience. A special issue for 2017 focusing on “Animal Models of
Infectious Diseases” is under preparation and, so far, includes original research articles and reviews on fi lo-
viruses and coxsackievirus involving guinea pigs, mice, and other species. Further to this, ZR would like to
extend a very warm invitation to all peer researchers in the fi eld to submit outstanding work to the journal on
this special issue.
Established in 1980, ZR is a bimonthly, open-access publication produced by the Kunming Institute of Zool-
ogy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the China Zoological Society. It publishes peer-reviewed original re-
search articles/reviews/reports/notes/letters to the editor in English on various topics, including Primates and
Animal Models, Conservation and Utilization of Animal Resources, and Animal Diversity and Evolution. ZR is
recognized as a core zoological periodical in China and is currently supported by the “PIIJ” program. ZR is
also indexed by many infl uential national and international databases including, but not limited to, PubMed/
MEDLINE/PubMed Central, Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory, Biological Abstracts, Zoological
Records, Chemical Abstracts, Abstract of Entomology, Chinese Biology Abstracts, Chinese Science Citation
Database, Bioline International, JSTChina (Japan Science and Technology Agency, Chinese Bibliographic
Database), Scopus, and ProQuest.

Introduction of Prof. Xiangguo Qiu
Prof. Qiu is currently a research scientist and the Head of Vaccine Development and Antiviral Therapy at the
Special Pathogens Program, National Microbiology Laboratory, Public Health Agency of Canada. She is also
an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Medical Microbiology, University of Manitoba, Canada, and a Vis-
iting Professor at the Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Military Medical Science. Her research
interests are focused on studying emerging/re-emerging Biosafety Level (BSL)-3 and 4 pathogens; developing
and testing novel vaccines for preventative protection against emerging pathogens; developing and evaluating
therapeutics, especially mAb-based therapy against BSL-3 and 4 viruses; developing animal models as a tool
for studying pathogenesis; and, characterizing host immune responses after virus infection.
Due to her outstanding work and contributions to the fi eld, Prof. Qiu has been recognized with the Research
Merit Award in 2006 and 2013 (endowed by the Public Health Agency of Canada for successfully developing
the VSV-EBOV vaccine and monoclonal antibody cocktail ZMAb/ZMapp to treatment Ebola virus infection),
the Dr. Frank Plummer Researcher of the Year Award in 2015 (Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease,
University of Manitoba), and the Friends of Africa Humanity Award by Help Fight Ebola Canada in 2016.
The ZMAb/ZMapp cocktail developed by Prof. Qiu was used in over 20 patients during the 2014–2016 Ebola
outbreak in West Africa with extraordinarily promising results (90% of patients survived a disease that typi-
cally has a 90% fatality rate).
Prof. Qiu has conducted extensive collaborations with researchers all over China. Additionally, she has pro-
vided BSL-4 training for visiting scientists from the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences,
and the Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Medical Academy of Sciences, thus helping to improve China’s
capacity to fi ght highly lethal pathogens. As a WHO expert, she has also been invited to provide technical
support and specialist advice on biosafety for international events, including the 2008 Beijing Summer Olym-
pics and 2010 Shanghai World Expo and Asia Games.
