PREFACE
Since this book was not written to be a mystery novel, the plot can be disclosed in the
first paragraph. The book was written to identify as many "alligators" as possible in
the swamps surrounding implementation of an integrated CAD/CAM system. Don't
be surprised, either, if, occasionally, you have a feeling "I've read this somewhere be-
fore." The ingredients of CAD/CAM are not new. Neither is the idea of a data base or
an integrated engineering manufacturing system.
Perhaps, like so many of us, you've been trying so hard to make one or all of the
ingredients of CAD/CAM work individually you haven't had time to study the bor-
ders between them. Besides, all the parts of CAD/CAM really do work now. All we
need to do is put them together.
We recommend this book to the strong hearted, and the weak hearted, to presi-
dents, managers, technical experts, engineers, parts programmers, marketing man-
agers, university students, architects, civil engineers, engineering administrators,
master schedulers, inventory control supervisors, but most of all to you - to the inno-
vators who believe in the need to modernize engineering and manufacturing systems
and to those who may at some time become a member of a task force. To those who al-
ready realize the need, this book, we hope will be invaluable to discern hidden as well
as obvious pitfalls before, during, and after implementation.
This is a "how to" book, although, to some, integration of systems as proposed
and described here may still sound highly idealistic or unreal. We believe with the tech-
nical knowledge and state of computer technology the "idealistic" can be converted to
reality. We propose to weld together the bright young people of industry who have no
fear of computer technology to the old hands in engineering and manufacturing who
have a strong sense of judgment of the past and a working knowledge of the peculiar
business aspects of their industry, through the medium of a working, highly motivat-
ed task force.
Departmental barriers and prejudices and former lack of communications and
knowledge of interdepartmental requirements can, and must, be eliminated. We have
attempted to help make this goal easier.
CAD/CAM is expensive. It will also create comparable savings and productivity
increases. Such a dramatic tool cannot be ignored. Knowledge we have painfully gar-
