Disaster “Horror Stories”
New York Metro Bank
Protected their “most mission critical” applications
with replication, the remaining were covered by tape
for cost savings.

During a major disaster, the bank lost all of its data
at the primary site. As expected, the “most mission
critical” applications failed over to the remote site.

However, due to the large number of businesses affected by the event,
there was a long wait to get their tapes from the third-party archive site
… weeks, and several additional weeks were required to recover the
data and bring the remaining applications back into full operation.
These “non-mission critical” applications in question were the bank’s
ATMs, online bill-pay service, and online banking functionality.

Disaster “Horror Stories”

Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
of 48 hours.
They decided not to failover
their systems to their recovery
site after they had been affected by a major hurricane.
They had no confidence the failover would work or that they would be
able to “failback” – bring their systems back from the failover site –
once their primary data center was operational again.
This lack of confidence came from having never tested the recovery
plan. The hurricane caused a six day outage
