- Typical sudano-sahelian climate

- From North to South : 3,00 – 1,200 mms of water / year

- Area : 274 200 Km2

- Capital city : Ouagadougou
- Population : about 16 million inhabitants
- 80% of the population live on agriculture
- Sorghum, maize, millet are the main food crops
- Cotton is the main cash crop

INTRODUCTION
- Tuber crops: cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, taro (Colocasia
and Xanthosoma)

- Taro: commonly grown on small surfaces, household-farm
crop, gardens, lowlands and treesʼ shade

- Orphan crops such as taro: no statistical data, lack of national
recovery

-However taro has nutritional, economic potentialities, thus,

-  Objective of the laboratory : to valorize taro in Burkina Faso

- to characterize the local varieties on the morphological,
molecular and biochemical levels

- then to improve the varieties which have an undesirable
characteristics

- Current activities: prospecting-collecting, agro-morphological
characterization, molecular characterization and ethnobotanical
study
-  The characterization concerns only Colocasia for the moment
