INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF WOODEN MONEY COLLECTORS
ft is a brand new year, a time for thinking about the future and a time to remember the past. It is
a time to plan and a time to taxe care ofall the things we put oti ior the holidays. And so it is with the
IOWMC. As I contemplate the task ahead, I see a club that could do more for the members. But what?
Here are some items that may spark some interest among the membership:
Putting together catalogs ofall woods from each state to include officials, store cards, good fors.
organizations, personals, numismatic, other categories and publish them in BC;
Meetings at local and regional shows through the vear:
Creating a slide show aboutwooden money for the AMA video Library:

Sharing your hobby with local organizations, including schools and civic organizations
Ofcourse, each of these programs would need dedicated people to ride herd over them. Take, for
instance, the cataloging idea, borrowed from the Associated Collectors ofEncased (ACE). Everyone
has an inventory ofthe woods they have, and they can and should be shared. Each state has an official
catalogerand inputs are sent to that individual forcollating and organizing. Once a decent list is created
for any state, it is sent to the editorfor inclusion in the newsletter, and updates can come atfuture
intervals. Is anyone interested in this?
Holding meetings at local or regional shows would need a member to contact the show organizers to set
up a meeting time, informing members in the area about the meeting, then holding the meeting itselfand
writing up results for BC. Any takers for these projects?
Many ot ourmembers have extensive collections thatwouitl make a wonderful presentation to; me ANA
Video Library that members and non-members could check out and enjoy. Is anyone up for something
like this?
Local outreach gains several important benefits, including sharing ajoy ofthe hobby with others,
getting kids interested in collecting wooden money, and perhaps creating enough interest in your town
so new issues ofwooden money are made. Is there going to be a town anniversary in your area? Step
up and help them create a nice souvenirofthat celebration and then telling the rest ofus about it in BC.
I'm doing this for my city's Sesquicentennial.
This organization would give support to any and all ofthese efforts. All it takes is some dedication on
the part of the individual members. would love to hear your views and ideas about how to make

We have had a good response to the cataloging initiative so far. Mr. Bob Kirk ofWest Virginia and Mr.

A
little Piece of Paradise
During the year. 2001. Eastham was celebrating a 350th Anniversary. There are not many communities in .America that can claim 350
vears ofcolorful history, even less have done so on wooden nickels. Eastham is a little piece ofparadise, a narrow strip ofland
boidered by the mighty Atlantic Ocean on one side and Cape Cod Bay on the other The town has long been known for its natural
beauty and rural character with loveiv marshes, ponds, and woods as well as breathtaking ocean vistas. Not commercialized, not
suburban, the town offers a special way oflife for both residents and visitors from around the world.
This community, nestled between two seas, is one ofthe oldest in English-speaking in North .America, The Nauset Indian community
had been here centuries prior to the white settlers, living a peaceful life offishing, hunting, and farming The first meeting between
the local Nausets and pilgrims from the Mayflower occurred in 1620 at Eastham’s First Encounter Beach, near what was then Nauset
Harbor Soon after, Eastham was settled by pilgrims who were dissatisfied with their land opportunities in Plymouth. Many
descendants ofthese first settlers still live in Eastham and their names grace businesses, street signs, and mailboxes
Eastham also has a rich heritage associated with the sea-its outer beaches and foggy bay side have seen numerous shipwrecks over the
last three centuries. Storms would cause the remains ofships and their bounty to pile up on Eastham shores, creating opportunities for
salvage as well as fostering enterprises to help shipwrecked seaman. It is also a history ofpeople foraging a living from tilling the
soil, whaiing, fishing, salt works, asparagus, and turnip farming.
Today. Eastham is best known for its beaches and conservation areas. You will find that one third ofEastham is preserved by the Cap
Ccd National Seashore With its proximity to nature, wiid beauty, and small town atmosphere, most Eastham residents could not
imagine living anywhere else.
The logo on the wood was copyrighted by the town and was used on different items that were sold to help offset the cost ofthe
celebration Wooden nickels were issued that show the logo on one side and the name ofa business who donated to the fundraising
effort on the other. There are 12 different pieces to the set and all are printed in blue ink. Each wood was also stamped with a letter
(A to Z) and a number (0 to9). Pnzes were awarded to people collecting woods from at least 3 different businesses and spelling out
E A S T H A M 3 5 0. Technically there are 26 letters times 10 numbers times 12 designs or 3120 different woods which makes this
by far the largest set ofofficial woods ever produced. A limited number ofsets having the 12 woods are available from Clint for
