Preface
The Bug Book is about bugs: hidden transmitters that can
broadcast your personal and business conversations to industrial-
strength spies, government agents, or perhaps the next door
neighbors-people who can listen to and record your most intimate
and important words, and perhaps use this information to their own
advantage. For blackmail, perhaps. Or to get an advantage over you
in business matters. Or to attempt to destroy you: wreck your
marriage, cost you your job, or whatever else.
The Bug Book is about how these devices work, how effective
they are, and how to find them and deal with them.
The Bug Book is also about how to use this technology in one's
own defense, should it become necessa.ry.
The Bug Bookis not intended for corporate security personnel
or private investigators, although they will probably find it useful.
It was not written for federal agents, even though the 'Alphabet
Soup" agencies will purchase it. No, The Bug Bookwas written
specifically for the general public-the machinist in Des Moines,
the secretary in Omaha, the plumber in Sacramento, the cab driver
in Phoenix, and the houseperson in Albany. My intent is to present
this information, including the technical stuff, in a way that the
"average pefson" can understand and use.
I either know or believe the technical information in this book
to be true and accurate, based on two years of college in
electronics, employment as a technician for a company that made
surveillance and countermeasures gear as well as for a professional
counte?measures company, a lifelong interest in communications,
and some personal experiences with surveillance. All of the case
histories are, unless otherwise stated, based on reallife events.
Some of the details, such as names and locations, have been
changed for obvious reasons. Some ofthe details have not been
changed for my own reasons. You know who you are. At least
some of you do . . .
