Explanationofthecolumnheaded "ThermometricalRegister."
The ThermometricalRegister commenceswith Nov.1858, and closes with Oct. 1859,
inclusive. These registershave beencarefully copied from thosemade at the Royal
Observatory,Greenwich,and which arealsodepositedwith the Royal Society. They
showthe highestandlowestrangeswithineachtwenty-fourhours,fromtwelvedifferent
readings. Each month is placed withits correspondingmonth,asaffordingthe most
readyandadvantageousmeansofcomparison,although bythisarrangementtheregister
of thelasttwomonthsof1858followsthetenmonthsof1859,whichareallwecangive
uptothedayofpublication.
Explanationofthe columnsheaded "Length ofday" "Day's increase ordecrease"
"Daybreaks,"and "Twilightends."
The column headed "Length of day" contains the number of hours and minutes
between sunrise and sunset. The column headed "Day's increase" expresses the
nwhuemrbeerthoefchooulrusmnanids hmeianudteeds"wDhaiyc'hsthdeecdraeyashea,s"iintcreexapsreedssseisnctehtehneusmhboretresotfdhaoyu;rsaanndd,
minuteswhichthedayhasdecreasedsince thelongestday; for example,thelengthof

In this Almanac the calculations are all made for mean time (given by the clock),
instead ofapparenttime (givenbythesun-dial),whichlatterhadbeen usedup to the
