Chief Executive of
Butterfl y Conservation
Butterfl ies are one of the most popular and
easily recognisable groups of animals . They
have an important place in our culture and
are widely used as symbols, both of the
beauty and fragility of nature, but also of
freedom and harmony .
Sadly, butterfl ies have undergone a
severe decline in recent decades and
today almost half our resident species are
threatened . Even in my lifetime, two species
have become extinct in Britain, although thankfully one of these, the Large Blue, has
been successfully reintroduced . I joined Butterfl y Conservation to do my bit to help
halt and reverse these declines, so creating thriving landscapes that are rich in butterfl ies
and moths .
Fortunately, I am not alone in this task and am joined by thousands of dedicated
volunteers and a talented staff . Butterfl y Conservation also works with a huge range
of partner organisations as well as landowners and farmers . We have received support
from business too, including Marks and Spencer who not only sponsor the Big Butterfl y
Count but who are also working with us and the RSPB to encourage butterfl ies and other
pollinators on their indicator farms . Although we face an enormous uphill battle to save
butterfl ies and moths, I am heartened by the strength and depth of all this support .
Butterfl ies are extremely sensitive to environmental change and are valuable
indicators of the health of the world around us . Measures to help them will allow
wildlife to fl ourish . If you are not already involved, there are many ways you can help . You
can get involved in our vital recording and monitoring schemes, become a member and
support your local Branch, take up wildlife-friendly gardening, make a donation or even
remember Butterfl y Conservation in your will .
I have been totally fascinated by butterfl ies since my childhood, when I watched
a caterpillar with awe as it grew and transformed fi rst into a chrysalis and then
miraculously into a beautiful adult butterfl y . The revised edition of this beautiful book
includes the latest information on our knowledge of UK species, both the resident
species and those that might colonise soon . I hope the book inspires you to learn more
about butterfl ies and help ensure that we pass that inspiration and joy down to future
generations .

Preface
Since the second edition of this book was published in 2010, two remarkable
events have occurred . One of our existing species has been found to be wrongly
named . Another, recorded only once in the UK in 1953, has appeared again .
Réal’s Wood White has had its name changed to Cryptic Wood White . This follows
DNA analysis which shows that what was believed to be one species is in fact two .
The name Réal’s Wood White is now given to the French species of wood white, while
the Irish species has been re-named Cryptic Wood White .
Small and Large Tortoiseshells are joined in this edition of the book by the Scarce
Tortoiseshell . This butterfly appeared in England in small numbers in 2014 as a result
of an unusual migratory movement from Eastern Europe . We can only speculate as to
whether, or how soon, it may arrive again, or indeed what changes will happen in the
future – but the possibility of new species joining the British and Irish lists remains open
as climatic conditions change gradually .
Unusual species are increasingly being reported in Britain and Ireland, although
all too often this is the result of inappropriate releases of captive-bred ‘foreign’
butterflies . Such releases are illegal and cannot be condoned; they also risk
masking the provenance of species that arrive naturally . For this reason we endorse
Butterfly Conservation’s Policy on collecting, breeding and photography, which can be
downloaded from http://butterfly-conservation.org/files/bc-policy_collecting-breeding-
-photography-2010.pdf . However, some unusual sightings are the result of a genuine
vagrant arriving as the outcome of unusual or changing weather patterns . To anticipate
possible future changes the section on species of doubtful provenance has been
extended to enable those species that may just possibly have occurred as genuine
vagrants to be illustrated . The most likely new arrival as a breeding species is the Map,
a butterfly that is common in much of Europe, and this now has a full species account .
In preparing this third edition, the opportunity has been taken to update many of
the species accounts by adding new information and/or clarifying the text . Additional
photographs of variants of three established butterflies are also included . The section
on foodplants has been expanded so that it not only lists main caterpillar foodplants
for each species, but also includes photographs of most of the common caterpillar
foodplants and highlights the species that use them .
Constructive comments from readers of previous editions of this book, and the
positive feedback received on the third edition of Britain’s Dragonflies (another of the
Princeton WILDGuides Britain’s Wildlife series), have resulted in the decision to redesign
the species account pages – with the aim of making the information presented even
more accessible than it was in earlier editions .
