2 dramatic and ongoing transformation, one which is perceptible in
3 the emergence of large-scale out-of-town shopping complexes and new
4 specialised shops in city centres. These boutiques are often designed
5 by well-known architectural firms such as OMA/Rem Koolhaas,
6 David Chipperfield and Herzog & de Meuron.
7 Boutiques and Other Retail Spacesis the first in a series of books
8 aiming to investigate the historical, theoretical and practical aspects
9 of interior architecture. The book begins with a collection of essays
10 presenting a critical and theoretical dimension to retail design
1 philosophy. These are followed by interviews with top boutique
2 designers and a series of 16 case studies spanning from 1891 to 2004
3 which demonstrate how boutique design has evolved in the face
4 of cultural, social and economic changes.
5 Illustrated throughout with a wealth of photographs and line
6 drawings, this book is an innovative and important contribution
7 to architectural and interior design theory literature.

9 David Vernetis an architect practicing in several European
20 countries. An Assistant Professor at the Chair of Architectural Design
1 and Interiors (Faculty of Architecture, TU Delft) from 2003 until
2 2006, he was involved in teaching multidisciplinary subjects, namely
3 performance architecture and retail design. He is currently involved
4 in promoting architectural policies on an European level.

7 Assistant Professor at the Chair of Architectural Design and Interiors
8 (Faculty of Architecture, TU Delft.) In 1998, she published a book
9 on School-Housing flexible designs. She is currently teaching retail
30 design and researching the interdisciplinary relations between
1 interior design and industrial design.

Interiors play a significant role in the patterns of changing use and
meaning in contemporary cities. Often designed as short-term
proposals in existing (and often former industrial or commercial)
buildings, their designers are able to respond flexibly to larger
developments on an urban and global scale, both following fashions
and trends and establishing them. In the design discipline, there is a
high level of awareness of new developments in the wider cultural
field, including the visual arts, popular visual culture, advertising
and media, that other disciplines within the architectural profession
sometimes lack.
At the same time, the study of interiors is a largely untheorized
field, operating mainly outside the traditional territory of academic
thought. This series aims to investigate the historical, theoretical and
practical aspects of interiors by subjecting the results of current design
activity and historical precedents to academic examination, discussing
them at the level of technical solutions (light, materials and services),
and against a wider cultural and historic background. All volumes
contain a series of critical articles, texts by practitioners and
documentation of key projects which have been selected to illustrate
both their place in the history of design and the architectural solutions
employed by their designers. The volumes in the Interior Architecture
series can be used as a handbook for the practitioner and as a critical
introduction to the history of material culture and architecture.

1 to a specific approach to the functioning of markets, by analysing
2 the role of the market mediation devices.

4 Mark Pimlottis an artist and designer. His public art works
5 include ‘Guinguette’, Birmingham (2000), ‘La scala’, Aberystwyth
6 (2003) and ‘World’, London (2002–10). His designs for interiors
7 include Neckinger Mills, London (1988) and Red House, London
8 (1999–present). He has taught architecture and visual arts since
9 1986, and is Professor in relation to practice in Interiors (Faculty of
20 Architecture, TU Delft, 2002–05). His book Without and Withinwas
1 published in 2006.
