Wewouldliketothanktheauthorsofthisvolumefortheirinspiringandinsightful
contributionsandfortheirdedicationinthevariousstepsofthisproject.
The discussions we had during international conferences and workshops with
many of our colleagues have been a huge motivation to pursue this book project.
We are particularly glad that the volume includes different theoretic approaches,
perspectives and views from scholars with different geographic and academic
backgrounds. The variety of the topics addressed in the volume highlights the
diverse shapes and expressions of the reconfigurations of power, politics and
identities which take place at the various borders and borderlands. We hope that
thisvolumeaddsnewperspectivestoamuchneededinterdisciplinarydialoguein
thefieldofborderstudiesandbeyond.
WewouldalsoliketothankourcolleaguesattheAustrianInstituteforInterna-
tional Affairs (oiip). This fifth volume of the institute’s Add-On Yearbook series
would nothave been possible without their involvement and active support at the
different stages of the project. The thought-provoking discussions have added
valuable perspectives and ideas. Our special thanks go to those colleagues who

Our special thanks also go to Chris Heather who has done a brilliant job on
proofreadingandformattingthechapters.
As in the past years, the City of Vienna has been an important and valuable
partner in producing the Add-On Yearbook series of the Austrian Institute for
InternationalAffairs.
