About Blue (Issue 2: Systems and Structure)
Following a very positive response to the first edition of Blue - which explored Waste, Water & Energy - Grimshaw Architects returns with a second volume that investigates the comparative themes of Systems & Structures. Inspired by nature, the practice continues the search for efficient and elegant design solutions. The opening essay, by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, revisits one of the architect’s defining projects: The British Pavilion for the World Expo (Seville, Spain). Designed twenty years ago, it draws on natural systems and uses the region’s abundant sunshine to create a cool oasis in Europe’s hottest city. Not only is it a pioneering demonstration on how technology can be harnessed to resolve environmental challenges, The Pavilion revealed how important lessons evolve from regional architectural responses. Affecting all aspects of design, this performative response to architecture is broader than energy use. The Systems section describes new approaches to vertical circulation in office buildings in an effort to increase efficiency for both area and daily operation. The idea of using innovative design interventions with older office buildings is also explored as a positive alternative to the typical solution of tear down and rebuild. In Melbourne, Australia the undulating geometry of Southern Cross Station effectively harnesses prevailing winds, providing all ventilation and cooling for the station hall. The Structures section examines spider web inspired cable netting and the origami-style folding of steel plates. The practice aims to use Blue as a vehicle for the sharing of thinking and solutions with fellow colleagues. The practice hopes this process will increase a collective ability in the quest for innovative solutions leading to a more sustainable future.
