Preface
Weliveinatimeofrapiddevelopment,highpace,andacceleratedclimatechange.The
primary focus of everyday life is the short-term and not the long-term benefits of the
individual, where the exploitation of natural resources is at the forefront. At the same
time, there is increasing awareness of the importance and effectiveness of biological
systems that have thrived for billions of years. A good balance between exploitation
andexplorationofresourcesiscrucialforlivingorganisms’survival.Theexperimentof
survivalanddevelopmentoflivingorganismsonearthhasbeencarriedoutforbillions
ofyears,withbillionsofparticipantsinadynamicandrapidlychangingenvironment.
The resultof this evolution isa richsetof survival mechanisms thathave enabled the
survivalofthemostadaptedspecies.Algorithmsinspiredbynaturearethosethattryto
transfertheseprovenmechanismsandtheir“survivalwisdom”tothefieldofcomputer
optimizationwhileatthesametimeenablingabetterunderstandingofit.
This volume contains recent theoretical and empirical contributions related to
bioinspiredoptimizationanditsconnectionwithmachinelearningpresentedattheTenth
InternationalConferenceonBioinspiredOptimizationMethodsandTheirApplications
(BIOMA2022),heldinMaribor,Slovenia,during17–18November,2022.TheBIOMA
conferencehasbeenorganizedsince2004,withtheprimarypurposeofbringingtogether
a community for discussing recent advances in bioinspired optimization and existing
challengesintransferringacademicknowledgeintoreal-worldapplications.
BIOMA2022received23submissions.Thereviewswereperformedby36members
oftheinternationalProgramCommittee.Eachpaperreceivedthreereviews.Basedon
these19paperswereaccepted,whichis82%ofthesubmissions.Theproceedingscontain
19papersby55(co)authorsfrom17countries.
The conference invited two contributions to be presented as keynote lectures. The
first keynote talk was provided by Carola Doerr from LIP6, Sorbonne Université and
CNRS, Paris, France. The second keynote talk was provided by Shih-Hsi Liu from
CaliforniaStateUniversity,Fresno,USA.
The contributions presented at the conference covered genetic algorithms,
swarmalgorithms,geneticprogramming,surrogate-basedoptimization,reinforcement
learning, improvements in differential evolution, sensitivity analysis for performance
assessment, and explainable machine learning techniques for explaining bioinspired
optimizationalgorithms’behavior.Theapplicationsofalgorithmscamefromdomains
suchasCOVID-19pandemicanalysisandcarrentalproblems.
Finally,webelievethatthepaperspresentedatBIOMA2022willprovidereaders
with recent advances in bioinspired optimization and their applications and highlight

possible gaps for future research. We are grateful to the conference sponsors, mem-
