Dames of America, pledge our loyal and affect-ionate allegiance to the Flag.
Article II of the ConsUtuttion
The objects of this Society shall be to collect and preserve manuscripts, traditions, relics, and mementos of bygone days;to
preserve and restore buildings connected with the early history of our country; to educate our fellow citizens and ourselves in our
country's history and thus diffuse healtl1ful and intelligent information concerning lhc past; to create a popular interest in our
Colonial history; to stimulate a spirit of true patriotism and agenuine love of country; and to impress upon the young the sacred
obligation ofhonoring the memory of those heroic ancestors whose ability, valor, sufferings, and achievements arc beyond all praise.

The National Society ofThe Colonial Dames in America in the State of
Alabama shares a common goalwith sister Dames across the nation in the active
preservation, maintenance and presentation ofl1istoricbuildings. In the objectivesof
this society,wesetthe goal:"...to preserve and restore historic buildings connected
withthe earlyhistory ofthis country."The Conde-Charlotte Museum House isan
Alabama Dames properly located in Mobile,Alabama.
The Dames purchased the house from the Mobile Historic preservation Society
In 1957 and set about renovating it. In 197 4, the refurbished Conde-Charlotte was
finally opened to the public.
Although the actual datesthat the original structure ofthe Conde-Charlotte
Museum House wasbuilt are not definitely known, Nicholas Holmes, respected
Mobile architect with a specialinterest in historic architecture, believesthat the main
portion ofthe building datesback to 1720, possiblyearlier.Upon completing a
detailed study ofthe structure ofthe house, Mr.Holmes concluded that, because of
the similarity of brick and mortar contained in the house to that used in the
construction of Fort Conde, along withthe use of "whipsawn"lumber, someparts of
the house werebuilt around the 1720s.
Subsequent to his initial dating, Mr.Holmes discovered amap from the period of
Spanish occupancy (1802-1813) that showeda structure labeled "King'sMagazine"
on the present location ofthe Conde-Charlotte House. The building isthought to
havelater servedasajail,then a courthouse, before being bought, renovated, and
turned into aresidence bythe Kirkbride family in 1849; they ownedthe house until
1926. After first being bought bythe Mobile Historic Preservation Society,it was
soldto the NSCDA in Alabama.
In addition to housing allthe ancestry records ofthe Alabama Dames, the
Conde-Charlotte Museum House isused to educate the public about the importance
of our ancestors, those whohave gonebefore us.The house showcasesthe history of
Mobile under the fiveflagsthat haveflownoverher; Spanish, French, English,
Confederate, and United States of America. Rooms in the house contain furnishings
of the different periods. For example,the front east parlor represents a commandant's
office and isfurnished with English pieces dating to the time of English occupancy of
Mobile, 1763-1780. The dining room iscalled the American room (1813), and
contains aperiod North Carolina corner cupboard aswellas a silvertea servicemade
bySimon Cauldron, whowasa silversmitb in NewYorkbefore moving to Demopolis,
Alabama asamember ofthe French vine and olivecolony.
The heritage ofthe National Society of Colonial Dames ofAmerica in Alabama
is displayedin our museum house, aproud symbolof our linkage to our distinguished
and cherished ancestors.
