This Open Access book series aims to make timely and targeted contributions for
decision-makers and on-the-ground practitioners by producing knowledge
concerning “socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes” (SEPLS) –
areaswhereproductionactivitieshelpmaintainbiodiversityandecosystemservices
invariousformswhilesustainablysupportingthelivelihoodsandwell-beingoflocal
communities. Each volume will be designed as a compilation of case studies
providingusefulknowledgeandlessonsfocusingonaspecificthemethatisimpor-
tant for SEPLS, accompanied by a synthesis chapter that extracts lessons learned
through the case studies to present them for policy-relevant academic discussions.
The series is also intended to contribute to efforts being made by researchers and
scientists to strengthen the evidence base on social-ecological dynamics and resil-
ience, including those under the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Convention on Biological
Diversity(CBD).
ThepromotionandconservationofSEPLShavebeenthefocusoftheSatoyama
Initiative, a global effort to realise societies in harmony with nature. In 2010, the
International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) was established to
implement the concept of the Satoyama Initiative and promote various activities
byenhancingawarenessandcreatingsynergiesamongthoseworkingwithSEPLS.
Asauniqueplatformjoinedbygovernmental,intergovernmental,nongovernmental,
private-sector, academic, and indigenous peoples’ organisations, IPSI has been
collecting and sharing the information, lessons, and experiences on SEPLS to
accumulateadiverserangeofknowledge.Casestudiestobepublishedinthisseries
willbesolicitedfrompractitioners,researchers,andothersworkingontheground,
whoareaffiliatedwithIPSImemberorganisationsandcloselyinvolvedandfamiliar
withtheactivitiesrelatedtoSEPLSmanagement.

In the context of a global pandemic and climate crisis, the relationship between
humansandnaturehascomeunderrenewedscrutiny.Wearecurrentlyinthesixth
phaseofglobalbiodiversityextinction,primarilydrivenbyanthropogenicactivities
and unsustainable development. This unprecedented biodiversity loss is placing
increasing pressures on the planet, and research shows that it is increasing the risk
offuturepandemics.
Aspartofourmissiontoadvanceglobaleffortstowardssustainability,UNU-IAS
has been contributing to the sustainable use of biodiversity at all levels through
research,policyengagement,andcapacitydevelopmentinitiatives.Wehavefocused
on promoting sustainable resource management approaches and positive human-
nature interactions in various geographically distinct socio-ecological production
landscapesandseascapes(SEPLS).IntegratedapproachesforSEPLSmanagement
have the potential to solve various local and regional problems while contributing
towardsachievingglobalgoalsforsustainabledevelopmentandbiodiversity.
This seventh book in the Satoyama Initiative Thematic Review (SITR) series
presentsasetofcasestudiesthatdemonstratecriticaldynamicsinthebiodiversity,
health, and sustainability nexus in the context of SEPLS. The case studies were
selectedinlightoflinkagesbetweenbiodiversityandhealthonwhichunderstanding
is beginning to develop. The studies show how SEPLS management has helped to
improvethequalityofenvironmentsandhumanlives,withmultipleotherbenefits,
makingitavaluabletoolforenhancingbothhumanandecosystemhealth.
ThecompilationofcasestudieswasproducedthroughtheSatoyamaInitiative,a
global effort to realise societies in harmony with nature. UNU-IAS has worked
closelywiththeMinistryoftheEnvironmentofJapantodevelopthisinitiative.We
havehostedtheSecretariatoftheInternationalPartnershipfortheSatoyamaInitia-
tive(IPSI)sinceitsestablishmentin2010attheTenthMeetingoftheConferenceof
the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 10) in Aichi,
Nagoya, Japan. In this role, we coordinate the efforts of partners across the globe
towards biodiversity conservation through integrated and holistic landscape and
seascape management approaches. IPSI has so far accumulated a diverse range of

knowledgeandexperiences, including adatabase of260casestudiessubmitted by
the283IPSImemberorganisations.Theyincludegovernmental,non-governmental,
research,and indigenous peoples’ organisations,working collaboratively for better
managementofSEPLSinvarioussettingsaroundtheworld.
TheSITRpublicationserieswaslaunchedin2015tosharetheknowledgeofIPSI
membersandshowcasetheirdiverseworkacrossmajorpolicy-relevantthemes.The
previoussixvolumeseachexploredaspecificsetofconcernsrelatedtobiodiversity
in the context of SEPLS. This latest book focuses on the biodiversity-health-sus-
tainability nexus, exploring approaches to build back better from the COVID-19
pandemic.
Thevolumeseekstoprovideinspirationandusefulknowledgeforpractitioners,
policymakers,andscientiststodeepentheunderstandingofthisnexusandadvance
local solutions to achieve global goals for health, biodiversity, and sustainable
development, using traditional and local knowledge. It will also provide a broader
contributiontotheknowledgebaseinformingkeypolicyprocesses,includingthose
of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem
Services (IPBES) and CBD. In particular, the case studies presented here provide
relevant and on-the-ground knowledge that will contribute to the ongoing IPBES
Nexus Assessment. The volume will help to inform and support the action that is
urgentlyneededtoconservebiodiversityandachievesustainability.

TheSatoyamaInitiativeseekstoadvancetheconceptofhumanslivinginharmony
withnature.Thishasbeentheprincipleonwhichnumerouscommunitiesacrossthe
globehavetraditionallylived,viewingandmanagingsocial-ecologicalsystemsfor
their well-being. Recognising the interdependence and reciprocal relationship of
nature and societies, human activities in such systems were attuned to ensuring
resilience from various disturbances. The intention of the Satoyama Initiative,
through the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), is to go
back to the basics and support the rejuvenation and strengthening of such systems
(termedsocio-ecologicalproductionlandscapesandseascapes,SEPLS)thatinvolve
a mosaic of ecosystems that are managed in diverse ways to provide multiple
benefitstopeople.Promotingsuchintegratedlandscapeandseascapemanagement
has been identified as a key solution to environmental issues ranging from biodi-
versity loss and ecosystem degradation to climate regulation by policy forums
includingtheConventiononBiologicalDiversity(CBD)andtheIntergovernmental
Science-PolicyPlatformonBiodiversityandEcosystemServices(IPBES).
Inthiscontext,theInitiativeincollaborationwithIPSIpartnershasbeenengaged
in identifying key lessons from such on-the-ground activities to inform various
sustainability-related policy priorities. Each volume of the Satoyama Initiative
Thematic Review (SITR) focuses on a specific area of policy interest and invites
manuscriptsdetailingtheexperienceofIPSIpartnersinaddressingthetheme.Since
thesixtheditionofSITR,wehavecollaboratedwithSpringerinpublishing.
The manuscripts are peer reviewed and written in a form that can be easily
understood by practitioners, policymakers, and of course academics. This volume
focuses on an important topic that has come to the forefront of all our lives since
