J. Robert Oppenheimer 1904 yılında New-York'ta doğmuştur. 1925 yılında Harward’ı bitirmiş ve çalışmalarını tamamlamak üzere gittiği Cambridge’de Niels Bohr, P. A. M. Dirac ve Max Born gibi büyük bilginlerle tanışmıştır. Daha sonra Berkeley Üniversitesi ve Kaliforniya Teknik Enstitüsü öğretim görevliliğine atanmıştır.1934 yılında «Oppenheimer Philips etkisi»ni bulmuş, 1943 yılında da atom çalışmalarının yapıldığı Los Alamos merkezinin yöneticiliğine getirilmiştir. Bilindiği gibi Hiroşima’ya atılan atom bombası bu merkezce hazırlanmıştır.
