Canadian Manuscript Report of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences
Manuscript reports contain scientific and technical information that contributes to existing knowledge but which
deals with national or regional problems. Distribution is restricted to institutions or individuals located in particular
regions of Canada. However, no restriction is placed on subject matter, and the series reflects the broad interests and
policies of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, namely, fisheries and aquatic sciences.
Manuscript reports may be cited as full publications. The correct citation appears above the abstract of each report.
Each report is abstracted in the data base Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts.
Manuscript reports are produced regionally but are numbered nationally. Requests for individual reports will be
filled by the issuing establishment listed on the front cover and title page.
Numbers 1-900 in this series were issued as Manuscript Reports (Biological Series) of the Biological Board of
Canada, and subsequent to 1937 when the name of the Board was changed by Act of Parliament, as Manuscript
Reports (Biological Series) of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada. Numbers 1426 - 1550 were issued as
Department of Fisheries and Environment, Fisheries and Marine Service Manuscript Reports. The current series
name was changed with report number 1551.

Les rapports manuscrits contiennent des renseignements scientifiques et techniques qui constituent une contribution
aux connaissances actuelles, mais qui traitent de problèmes nationaux ou régionaux. La distribution en est limitée
aux organismes et aux personnes de régions particulières du Canada. II n'y a aucune restriction quant au sujet; de
fait, la série reflète la vaste gamme des intérêts et des politiques de Pêches et Océans Canada, c'est-à-dire les
sciences halieutiques et aquatiques.
Les rapports manuscrits peuvent être cités comme des publications à part entière. Le titre exact figure au-dessus
du résumé de chaque rapport. Les rapports manuscrits sont résumés dans la base de données Résumés des sciences
aquatiques et halieutiques.
Les rapports manuscrits sont produits à l'échelon régional, mais numérotés à l'échelon national. Les demandes de
rapports seront satisfaites par l'établissement auteur dont le nom figure sur la couverture et la page du titre.
Les numéros 1 à 900 de cette série ont été publiés à titre de Manuscrits (série biologique) de l'Office de
biologie du Canada, et après le changement de la désignation de cet organisme par décret du Parlement, en 1937,
ont été classés comme Manuscrits (série biologique) de l'Office des recherches sur les pêcheries du Canada. Les
numéros 901 à 1425 ont été publiés à titre de Rapports manuscrits de l'Office des recherches sur les pêcheries du
Canada. Les numéros 1426 à 1550 sont parus à titre de Rapports manuscrits du Service des pêches et de la mer,
ministère des Pêches et de l'Environnement. Le nom actuel de la série a été établi lors de la parution du numéro
1551.

INTRODUCTION

The bibliography is meant as a reference guide to literature on Arctic marine fishes in
Canadian waters. It is a source for works on species accounts and the general text of the book
(Marine Fishes of Arctic Canada), and is also one of the sources for mapping, in addition to
museum collections and anecdotal reports.
The bibliography comprises over 5,340 items.
Modern literature is often available on-line, free or at a cost, but the links for these items
are not always cited here as they are easily searched for and earlier ones are defunct.
Some literature cited here is from areas outside Canadian waters but is included for its
relevance. Coverage of adjacent regions is not exhaustive but some extra-limital works are
included as they provide information on biology lacking for strictly Canadian waters. Systematic
and taxonomic works may also be from outside the Arctic but are of relevance to an
understanding of Arctic fishes and are included here. Some earlier, purely systematic, works are
not cited since they are summarised in later synoptic works, e.g. Andriyashev (1954). Some
references are on freshwater fishes and this is not an exhaustive survey on this Arctic fauna but a
sampling deemed to be of some relevance since the fish enter the sea.
Not all documents cited here are readily available (to us; nor to McAllister and
Steigerwald (1986), the last bibliography on this ichthyofauna); many are consultant reports of
limited or restricted circulation which were cited in other, similar reports and copied here. They
are included for completeness and are variably available in local libraries of several government
departments and universities. A wide range of articles cited here mention fishes only in passing
or are conference abstracts but again are cited for the sake of completeness; this is usually self-
evident from the title and article length and nature.
The principal libraries searched were the Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa (the
library is in Gatineau, Québec and is online at http://nature.ca); the reprint collections housed in
the Research Services Division of the Canadian Museum of Nature in Gatineau (not online but
card indexed and filed by author and available to visitors); Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ottawa
and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Winnipeg (internet access to holdings in Fisheries and Oceans
libraries across Canada is available on-line through the "Waves" website (http://waves-
vagues.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/waves-vagues/); Environment and Climate Change Canada, Gatineau;
Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, Gatineau; Geological Survey, Ottawa; Boreal Institute
Library, University of Alberta, Edmonton; Arctic Institute of North America, Library, University
of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta (available on-line at the "ASTIS" website at
www.aina.ucalgary.ca/astis/ and the Natural History Museum, London, England. Additional
materials were obtained through interlibrary loan from a wide variety of libraries.
Some species have a wide distribution outside Canadian or Canadian Arctic waters and
have great commercial or ecological significance. The literature on these species is extensive but
not all of it could be cited here or indeed was relevant to Arctic marine populations.
Bibliographies on these species and on other topics are included in this bibliography.
Publications by the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization are on-line at
www.nafo.int. Most relevant Scientific Council Research Documents and Summary Documents
are listed in this Bibliography. Scientific Council Reports and Meetings also briefly, or in

passing, mention fishes from the Canadian side of Davis Strait but their listing here is less
complete.
Coverage of newspaper and magazine articles on Arctic fishes is eclectic and incomplete.
Generally such works do not contain significant amounts of new information.
A detailed survey of papers on fish parasitology is not included as there are several
synoptic works on this fauna (Margolis and Kabata (1984-1996), Margolis and Arthur (1979),
and McDonald and Margolis (1995)).
Figures, photographs and maps are only cited if they are not included on numbered
pages. Consultant reports often comprise several sections, separately numbered and some pages
unnumbered, with inserted maps and figures, various appendices and other inclusions, and often
photocopies with the page numbers cut off - they are often listed as "1 volume, pagination
various" to accommodate all this.
Articles by Andriashev, for example, also transliterated as Andriyashev, are listed by
year rather than by variant spelling and year; other, English-named authors are listed
alphabetically including their initials (not always completely cited) and then by year.
