The prolific theatrical activity that abounded on the stages of early modern Europe O
demonstrates that drama was a genre that transcended national borders. The transnational
character of early modern theater reflects the rich admixture of various dramatic traditions,
such as Spain’s comedia and Italy’s commedia dell’arte, but also the transformations across
cultures of Spanish novellas to French plays and English interludes. Of particular import
to this study is the role that women and gender played in this crosspollination of theatrical B
sources and practices. Contributors to the volume not only investigate the gendered effect e

of Spanish texts and literary types on English and French drama, they address the actual

Anne J. Cruzis Professor of Spanish and Cooper Fellow at the University of
Miami. She has written extensively on the literature and culture of early
modern Spain. Recent publications include the co-edition, with Maria Galli
Stampino, Early Modern Habsburg Women: Transnational Contexts,
Dynastic Continuities, Cultural Politics(Ashgate, 2013); and The Life and
Writings of Luisa de Carvajal y Mendoza(Iter; Centre for Renaissance and
Reformation Studies Press, 2014). A Corresponding Memb er of Spain’s
Royal Academy of History, she was recently elected Memb er of the
Instituto Universitario de la Corte en Europa, Universidad Autónoma,
Madrid.
Ana Fernández Valbuena received her Ph.D. in Italian Philology from the
Universidad Complutense, Madrid. She is Professor of the Performing
Arts at the Universidad Nebrija, Madrid. Among her most recent
publications on European theater are the editions Teatro noruego
contemporáneo (Jon Fosse y Marit Tusvik) (Teatro del Astillero, 2014);
with Christian Machiels, Regards Croisés Espagne/Fédération Wallonie
Bruxelles. Le parcours et la situation des professionnels du théâtre
(Association Marcel Hicter pour la Democratie Culturelle-FMH, 2015);
and “Los cómicos del Arte en la profesión teatral española del siglo XVI
(y en la del XXI)” (El patrimonio del teatro clásico español: actualidad
y perspectivas, 2015).
Ignacio López Alemany is Associate Professor of Spanish at the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro and editor of Calíope: Journal of the
Society for Renaissance and Baroque Hispanic Poetry. He has authored
the monograph Ilusión áulica e imaginación caballeresca en El cortesano
de Luis Milán(UNC Press, 2013). He co-edited, with Jason McCloskey,
the anthology Signs of Power in Habsburg Spain and the New World
(Bucknell UP, 2013). He is also co-author, with J.E. Varey, of El teatro
palaciego en Madrid: 1707–1724. Estudio y documentos(Tamesis, 2006).
José A. López Anguitareceived his doctorate in Early Modern History from
the Universidad Complutense, Madrid with a dissertation on Marie-
Louise of Savoy. His publications include “Entre Francia y la Monarquía
