I would like to express deep gratitude to Professor Cristina Tsuha for believing in me and
for giving me the opportunity to conduct this study. I only have to thank her for all that I have
learned on work, scientific methodology, analysing, reasoning and writing. Without her guidance,
encouragement, enthusiasm and support, this research would not have happened. I would also
thank her for all the efforts made to materialize the Brazilian-French joint supervision of this
thesis.
I thank Professor Luc Thorel, not only for co-supervising this research, but for the
invaluable experience shared while I was a visiting student at IFSTTAR, and for the trips to Brazil
