we were fresh-faced 20-somethings with little money and a lot of
enthusiasm. It was definitely a splurge for the nursery, but we wanted
to invest in some transitional pieces that we could use for years to come.
The clean lines, dovetail joints and solid wood have held up beautifully
the last 15 years. It’s been well used, but now sits empty in a corner of
our daughter’s room because I can’t bear to part with it. I occasionally
sit and stare at it, open its drawers and waver about what to do with it.
With its good proportions, I’ve had many opportunities to use it.
I’ve moved it into the hallway, down to the lower level and then back
up again. I tried it in the media room and considered it for the foyer. No
matter where it’s migrated, it can’t seem to find a comfortable place to
stay. I finally realized why. The pale bleached finish leaves much to be
desired. At first, the idea of painting over wood horrified me, but as a
little time passed, I realized that I’m at a stalemate. I don’t want to sell
it, but it’s in excellent condition and I’m not using it. What’s the point
of keeping a piece pristine if it’s not going to be used?
One of my first spring projects is going to be to makeover this lovely
