Настоящее учебное пособие составлено для магистрантов программы
«Превод в сфере юридической и экономической коммуникации». В рамках этой
программы осуществляется реализация интерактивного практико-
ориентированного курса «Basics of tourist-excursion activities». Данное пособие
представляет собой тематически обусловленный сборник текстов экскурсий и
упражнений по переводу текстов Донского края с английского языка на
русский и с русского языка на английский. Цель пособия направлена на
подготовку специалистов, готовых осуществлять экскурсионное обслуживание
туристов и экскурсантов в организациях и на предприятиях туристической
индустрии. Престижность профессии экскурсовода, повышение значимости их
роли в диалоге культур и государств, в межкультурной коммуникации,
обеспечивают неподдельный интерес обучаемых к данной дисциплине.

Introduction
The relevance of the course is determined by the fact that with an
increase in the volume of intercultural contacts, as well as an increase in the
interest of a foreign audience in the objects of the artistic and historical
heritage of the Rostov region, the need for an adequate translation of
excursion texts has increased, thus the translation and adaptation of excursion
materials for a foreign audience has increased.
The course is based on materials aimed at studying the regional
component of the South of Russia, namely such cities of the Rostov region as
Rostov-on-Don, Tanais, Novocherkassk, Starocherkasskaya village.
The goal of the program is to form the necessary professional skills
and competencies in the preparation of a guide-interpreter. The main tasks are
to provide knowledge in the following areas:
methodology and technology for creating excursions on various topics
based on the use of tourist resources;
modeling excursion and tourist routes, taking into account the requests and
expectations of potential consumers of excursion services;
text formation and linguistic support in excursion activities;
issues of using the components of pedagogy, psychology, ethics and other
sciences in the excursion;
areas of intercultural communication in the planning, modeling and
implementation of the excursion product;
the complexity of excursion services, its association with various types of
tourism, the prospects for development directions.
As a result of studying the discipline, undergraduates must know:
essential characteristics of excursions on various topics;
technology for the expedient use of tourist resources;
linguistic specifics of excursion texts (to acquaint students with the main
problems of translation of historical texts, non-equivalent vocabulary,
national and cultural realities)
pedagogical and psychological aspects of excursion services;
the role and importance of excursion products in intercultural
communication;

cultural norms and restrictions in communication, taking into account
customs, traditions and etiquette existing in other cultures (countries);
the place and role of the professional activity of the guide in the economic
and social life of society;
conceptual trends in the effectiveness of excursion activities in the tourism
industry;
Be able to:
– translate in compliance with the norms of lexical equivalence, compliance
with grammatical, syntactic and stylistic norms;
– carry out oral consecutive translation and sight translation in compliance
with the norms of lexical equivalence, the grammatical, syntactic and stylistic
norms of the translated text and the temporal characteristics of the source
text;
- possess international etiquette and rules of conduct for an interpreter in
various situations of interpretation and translation (accompanying a tourist
group, ensuring business negotiations, ensuring negotiations of official
delegations, etc.)
model excursion and tourist routes (taking into account their prospects) for
various groups of tourists and excursionists;
develop excursions and excursion tours of various subjects in accordance
with the requirements of the excursion methodology;
construct excursion texts of various types and forms, taking into account
their linguistic specifics;
substantiate the best methods of organizing and conducting excursions and
excursion tours;
creatively apply in practice the skills of intercultural communication;
adequately interpret the communicative behavior of representatives of
another culture on the basis of tolerance to other cultures, languages and
religions.
The textbook consists of 6 modules, each module includes excursion
materials, lesson vocabulary, training exercises, texts for translation and
interpretation in English and Russian. The manual includes materials on the
Rostov region, the city of Rostov-on-Don, the village of Starocherkasskaya,
the ancient city of Tanais and Novocherkassk.

Module 1. The tour guiding as a complicated cross-cultural
process. Professional competences and skills
The first module is devoted to the tour guiding as a complicated cross-
cultural process and professional competencies which a good guide should
achieve and master.
First of all let’s give the definition to a tour guide. This definition is
taken from the World Federation of Tourist Guide Association. It says that a
tour guide is a person who guides visitors in the language of their choice
and interprets the cultural and natural heritage of an area which person
normally possesses an area-specific qualification usually issued or
recognized by the appropriate authority (The World Federation of Tourist
Guide Association; 2003).
Some scholars add the following information “Tour guides are cultural
ambassadors of a country, they can make or break the trip” . In real life it’s
true because tourists make their personal impressions about the country they
visited through their interactions with tour guides. Moreover tour guiding
constitutes a strategic factor in the representation of a destination area and in
influencing the quality of tourist experience, length of stay, and the resulting
economic benefits for a local community.
In addition, they represent all the people living in the state, reflect the
attitudes, traditions and ideas they hold. Also, they are the only liaison
between the tourism companies, tourism transportation companies,

restaurants, hotels and other tourism facilities and the tourist.
Some scholars describe the modern tour guide as a pathfinder and a mentor.
They identify the four main roles of the tour guide: instrumental, social,
interactionary and communicative (Al Faouri, Subhi, 2006).
The instrumental role is associated with the mission of completing the tour as
a social enterprise.
The social role relates to the guide’s commitment to the touring stakeholders.
The interactional role is related to the guide’s position as an intermediary
between the tourists and other tour stakeholders, such as the local people,
institutions or attractions.
The communicative role is associated with a guide’s ability and willingness
to provide tour related information to tourists.
In order to be highly professional a tour guide should have a lot of
competencies that make up a professional profile. We can distinguish 4 main
competencies
1) Communication skills
2) General behaviour
3) Responsible tourism and guiding ethics
4) Organization skills and leadership
Communication skills. Let’s define the notion communication within the
framework of tourist industry.
Communication is defined as a mutual interactive process between the sender
of the message (a tour guide) and the recipient of this message (tourists).
Moreover it’s the process by which the tour guide transmits specific
meanings, information or ideas to tourists using verbal messages combined
with non-verbal messages (facial expressions or body language).
In its turn communication competencies include some specific skills to
follow:
1. Human emotions
To make an effective communication, one must take into consideration the
fact that communication is basically an interactive mutual process based on

human emotions. That’s why a tour guide should be confident, enthusiastic,
active, energetic, sensitive, observable, open to other perspectives. He needs
to be charismatic and passionate about being a tour guide. Customers pay for
a memorable experience and entertainment. It’s the key moment.
2. Cultural differences
In order to be successful there is a need to determine the objective of
the communication process in advance and to consider how the other
individual in the communication process interprets these objectives and
respond to them because tour guides constantly interact with tourists whose
cultural backgrounds are different from their own. To communicate optimally
with their international travelers, tour guides need to understand the way in
which cultural factors might affect tourists’ experiences. Guides’ approaches
must include their own views about the best way to communicate with
tourists in a cross-cultural setting and be aware of cross-cultural
communication in tourist business. For example, Westerners may evaluate
verbal and non-verbal communication competency differently from
Easterners. Women from the Middle East might find handshaking with their
guides unacceptable, whereas visitors from Western cultures may consider
avoiding a handshake rude behavior.
3. Public speaking skills
A good guide should be a good public speaker. You will generally be
speaking in front of a huge group of people on most of the tours you lead so
you have to understand the basic
principles of public speaking. You
should learn how to speak clearly, how
to project your voice, how to talk
calmly and slowly so that people can
understand you, and also learn how to
control your breathing so that you don’t
get tired.

4. Narration skills
Narration is far more than just public speaking. Story telling is one of
the key elements of guiding tours, especially in historically significant towns
or areas where lots of interesting events have taken place. Narration is all
about being enthusiastic, capturing your audience’s attention and allowing the
tourists to feel as though they are part of the story. One important part of
narrating to people is to not overwhelm them with facts and figures. Dates are
important to know, but it is not interesting for people to listen to lists of dates.
Make sure you have a few fun and compelling stories to tell about the
buildings and sites you’re looking at. People are more likely to feel engaged
when they are listening to a story, rather than a list of dates and names.
The second competence is called General behaviour.
The general behaviour of a guide is very important. Here are some guidelines
and tips of good general behavior for tour guides. So, a good guide should....
Ask tourists individually how they would like to be named (e.g. Mr. Jones
or Michael or Sir)
Find out if there is anything they want to see/taste and include these in the
tour, if you can.
Help tourists when you see they need help (e.g. taking photos)
Make sure that tourists know what their vehicle looks like when it is parked
with lots of other vehicles which look the same
Make sure air-con is on and vehicle is cool, before tourists get on (if
weather is hot; or warm if weather is cold)
Before leaving a site count the number of tourists when they get back on the
vehicle (to make sure no one is missing)
There are also some basic rules to follow while eating and using a phone. For
example, a guide should
Eat with the tourists, with good table manners
Make sure all tourists have their food before you start to eat
Give you cell phone number to tour group members, so that they can
contact you if they get lost from the group during tour time/in an emergency
Excuse yourself from the tour group if you have to take an emergency call
