FOREWORD
When I gave up full-time employment in the field of computing training a few
years ago, I started teaching bridge as a way of capitalising on my training
background and my years of bridge playing, and as a way of earninga l ittle
money. I soon found this was tremendously rewarding and also the most
terrific fun. I love the game of bridge and I love bringing its joys to others —
even those who I suspect will never advance to become great players!
As a bridge teacher, though, I needed material — reference books to make
sure I didn't overlook some of the basics, example hands for students to play,
exercises for them to work on and so forth. EBUTA and the indefatigable
Pat Husband were a big help and I quickly found the handy Task Master
workbooks written by Andrew Kambites and Pat herself to be very useful. I
also found myself turning very frequently to the books of Ron Klinger for
their clarity of presentation and wealth of examples. In Basic Bridge,
therefore, I was delighted, as will be countless other bridge teachers and
students, to find all three collaborating.
This book would have saved me a great deal of time when I first started
teaching bridge. I am sure it will prove a godsend to many others like me in
the future.
