EndlichervahdlypublishedPhyllocarpuswithasingleelement,L.pterocarpus,
whichisautomaticallythe typeofthegenus. Hedistinguished it from
PlatymisciumVogelandMiscolohiumVogel{=DalbergiaL.f.)byitsmembra-
nouslegumewiththevexillarysuturevariouslywinged.Lonchocarpuspterocarpus
DC.{=DegueliascandensAubl.)haswingedfruitsthataresomewhatfragile
(MacBride 1943),andsothediagnosiscouldwelldescribematerialofL.
pterocarpus.
In 1843 Tulasnc(1843)describedPhyllocarpusRiedel exTub,specifi-
callyexcludingEndlicher'sPhyllocarpus,"nonEndl.Gen.SuppII,p.97,n.

in rhegenus,itisthetypeo'iPhyllocarpusRiedelexTul.In 1844Tulasne
(1844)republishedhisgenericdescriptionverbatim,amplifiedthedescription
ofi^ riedelii,discussedthegenericrelationsofPhyllocarpus,andillustrated
thespecies. Healsostatedthatspecimenno. 1022 intheGuilleminher-
bariumwasaRiedelcollection.ApparentlyTulasneexaminedRiedel'scol-
lectioninGuillemin'sherbarium,andnotedthatEndlicher'sPhyllocarp/zs
didnotcorrespondtowhatRiedelhadintended.Thereforeheredescribed
PhyllocarpususingthematerialofRiedel,andtherebycreatedasecondPhyllocarp//s
whichisalater,illegitimatehomonym.
Geesink(1984)separatedDegueliaAubl. fromDenisLonr.,andplaced
alltheAmericanspeciesofDerr/sinDtc,'//cV/V/,includingL.pterocarp/is.He

In 1912Tulasne'sPhyllocarpuswasdiscovered inCjuatemala,andJohn
DonnellSmith(1913)mistakenlydescribeditasanewspecies,P.septeutrumalis
Donn.Sm.ItwaslaterdiscoveredasfarsouthasPanama(Standley&Steyermark
1946;Woodson&Schery1951;Holdridge&Poveda1975).Barneby(1996)
reviewedthegenus,andconcludedthatitismonotypicandthatP.sepieiitrionalis
isalatersynonymof.P. riedelii.
PhyllocarpusinthesenseofTulasnehastraditionallybeenacceptedasa
genusintheFabaceae.Ithasbeenusedinsystemsoflegumeclassification
(Bentham 1865;Hutchinson 1964;Cowan&PolhiU 1981;Polhill 1994),
floras(Bentham 1870;Britton&Rose1930;Standley&Steyermark 1946;
Woodson & Schery 1951; Holdridge & Poveda 1975; Isely 1975), and
morphologicalstudies(Gunn 1991).Fromthedescriptionsintheseworks,
itisobviousthattheauthorsmentionedabovewerereferringtoPhyllocarpus
RiedelexTul.However,inBrittonandRose(1930)andWoodsonandSchery
(1951)itsplaceofpublicationwasgivenasthesecondsupplementtoEndlicher's
Generumplantarum(1842),andalsoinBrittonandRose(1930)itstypewas
citedas^'PhyllocarpusPterocarpusRiedel,"anunpublishedepithet.

Isely(1975)wasthefirsttonotethatTulasne'sPhyllocarpuswasalater
homonymofEndlicher'sPhyllocarpus,andthereforeillegitimate. Barneby

InhisreviewBarneby(1996)gavethedistributionofB. riecleliiasCen-
tralAmericafromGuatemalatoPanama,thePurusbasininthesouthwestern
BrazilianAmazon,andthevicinityofRiodeJaneiro.Ithasrecentlybeen
collectedinAmazonianPeru(N.Begarzo130,20May1980[US])andVenezuela
(J.Lissots.n.,24Nov1975{US})partiallyfiUingthegapbetweenCentral
AmericaandthesouthwesternBrazihanAmazon.Barneby(1996)castdoubt
onwhetheritwasnativetothevicinityofRiodeJaneiro.Asfarasheknew,
ithasnotbeencollectedasawildplantnearRiodeJaneiro.
BarnebydendronhasbeenreportedascultivatedinsouthernFlorida,Cuba,
Guatemala,CostaRica,andPanama.Wildtreesare15—35mtall,andcul-
tivatedfloweringspecimensare 5—12 m tall. Itflowers inthedryseason
withoutleaves,andisfullofflowersthataredescribedasvariousshadesof
intensered.StandleyandSteyermark(1946)stated,"ingeneralappearance
andinthecolorofitsblossomsthistreesuggestspoinciana{Delonix)andis
almostequallyshowy,"andWoodsonandSchery(1951)wrote,"theabun-
dantscarletflowersrivalinginshowinessthoseoftheRoyalPoinciana{Delonix
regia)."Thisbeautifultreemeritsmorewidespreadcultivation.
