Abstract
Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks (WSANs) consisting of mobile and fully au-
tonomousnodesaremeanttooperateinknownaswellasinunknownenvironments.
Thelackofpositioninformationtocoordinatesensorandactornodesinunknown
environmentsisstillachallengingtask. AlargevarietyofWSANsapplicationsrely
onaccuratepositioninformationandcannotoperateunlessnodesknowwherethey
are. Itisthereforeessentialtoprovidesensorswiththisknowledge,typicallybythe
usageofalocalizationsystem. Becauseofthelimitedavailabilityinindoorenviron-
mentsandthepotentiallytoolowaccuracy,GPScannotalwaysbeused,requiring
theusageofaLocalPositioningSystem(LPS). Thesesystemshaveattractedthe
attentionofmanyresearchgroups,however,thereisstillnocommonlyaccepted
systemavailable.
ThegreatestchallengeforageneralpurposeLPSisitsautonomousinitialization
orbootstrappinginunknownenvironments. Furthermore,tonotlimittherangeof
applications,manualinteractionortheexistenceofacentralprocessingunitcan
notbeassumed. Otherimportantfeaturesarescalability,theabilitytocontinuously
adapttochangingenvironments,andtheindependencefromaprioriknowledge.
Noneoftheexistingsolutionsfullyfeaturealloftheseproperties.
We therefore developedthe Autonomous Localization Framework (ALF) that
provideslocalizationsupportfortrulyself-organizinganddistributedsystemswith-
out relying on global knowledge. Based on simple distance measurements and
radiocommunication,mobilegroundrobotsstrategicallydistributethemselvesina
potentiallyunknownenvironmenttosubsequentlyformareferencegridinafully
decentralizedanddistributedmanner. Thisreferencegridcanbeseenasaglobal
coordinatesystemenablingnodestodeterminetheirpositioninrelationtoallother
nodes.
Oursystem clearlyoutperforms relatedapproaches in terms ofscalability, ro-
bustness,andaccuracy. Furthermore,itiscompletelyhardwareindependentand
considerstimingconstraints. Tobackuptheseclaimsweshowedthatoursystemcan
enabletheautonomousflightofaquadrotorbasedonpositionsobtainedbyALF.

Kurzfassung
DrahtloseSensor-undAktornetzwerke,bestehendausbeweglichenundvollstän-
digautonomenKnoten,sinddafürvorgesehen,inbeliebigerUmgebungeingesetzt
zuwerden.VoralleminunbekanntenUmgebungensindPositionsinformationen,
welcheunverzichtbarfürdieAbstimmungzwischenSensor-undAktorknotensind,
immernocheineHerausforderung.FüreineVielzahlvonAnwendungenistesun-
abdingbar,dassKnotengenaueLageinformationenerhalten.DieseInformationen
können durch ein Lokalisierungssystem bereit gestellt werden. GPS kann wegen
derbegrenztenVerfügbarkeitinnerhalbvonGebäudensowiedermöglicherweise
zu geringen Genauigkeit nicht immer eingesetzt werden. In solchen Fällen wer-
den Lokale Positionierungssysteme (LPS) verwendet. Obwohl diese Systeme die
AufmerksamkeitvielerForscheraufsichziehen,hatsichnochKeinesdurchgesetzt.
DiegrößteHerausforderungfüreinuniverselleinsetzbaresLPSist,dassessich
inunbekanntenUmgebungenautonominitialisierenkann.DasSystemsollnicht
aufmanuelleInteraktionenodereinezentraleRecheneinheitangewiesensein,denn
dadurchwerdendieVerwendungsmöglichkeiteneingeschränkt.Weiterewichtige
EigenschaftensindSkalierbarkeit,dieFähigkeit,sichanveränderteUmgebungen
anzupassenundderVerzichtaufVorwissen.KeinederbereitsbestehendenLösungen
bietetalledieseEigenschaften.
EswurdeeinAutonomesLokalisierungsframework(ALF)entwickelt,dasohne
VerwendungvonglobalemWisseneineLokalisierungvonselbstorganisierendenund
verteiltenSystemenermöglicht.BasierendaufeinfachenEntfernungsmessungenund
drahtloserKommunikation,verteilensichmobileBodenroboterstrategischsinnvoll
ineinerbeliebigenUmgebung.Anschließendbildensievölligdezentralundverteilt
einReferenzgitter.DiesesReferenzgitter,welcheseinKoordinatensystemdarstelt,
ermöglichtesKnoten,ihrePositioninRelationzuallenanderenzubestimmen.
DasSystemübertrifftandereAnsätzeimHinblickaufSkalierbarkeit,Robustheit
undGenauigkeit.Zudemistesvollständighardwareunabhängigundberücksichtigt
zeitliche Anforderungen. Zur Untermauerung der Behauptungen wurde gezeigt,
dass es auf Grundlage von ALF sogar möglich ist, einen Quadrokopter autonom
fliegenzulassen.

Introduction
Locationawarenessisoneofthemostimportantinformationforabroadvariety
ofapplicationsinthedigitalworld. Often,dataisofnousewithoutaproperlocal
correlation. Beitthedetectionofacupinacoffeemakerorthelocalizationofan
objectviathewidelyusedGlobalPositioningSystem(GPS)arejusttwoexamplesof
classiclocalizationsystems. Itisobviousthatsystemsdesignedforoneoftheseuse
casesaremostlikelynotapplicablefortheotherone. GPS,forexample,islimitedto
outdooroperation,whileasmallphotosensorwillcertainlynotbeabletopinpoint
objectsonaglobalscale. Thesetwosystemscaninawaybeseenasextremesof
awiderangeoflocalizationapplications. However,forplentyoftheusecasesin
betweenacommonlyacceptedsystemhasnotyetbefound. Althoughatremendous
amountofresearcheffortduringmanyyearshasbeenputinsuchsystems,thisstill
holdsforthesmallerscale,wherethefunctionalityofasystemlikeGPSisdesirable
butnoteasytoachieve. GPS-deniedareaslikeindoorenvironmentsstillremainan
openchallenge. Here, thewiderangeofdifferentsurroundings, parametersand
scenariosforcedeveloperstospecificallydesignsystemsforonepurposewhichmay
thereforenotbesuitableforothers.
Inscenarios,suchasSearchandRescue(SaR)missionsorfirefightingoperations,
whereGPSsignalsmightnotbeavailable,itis—especiallyforself-organizingunits
—importanttoknowtheircurrentposition. Inlivethreateningsituationsthesetup
timeaswellasaccuracyofasystemareofvitalimportance. Toovercomethelack
ofpositioninformation,ithasbeenproposedtodeployrobotassistedsystemsto
find trapped persons [74] by using a Local Positioning System (LPS) based on a
gridofmanuallyplacedreferencenodesatknownpositions,socalledlandmarksor
anchorswhichenablerobotstolocalizethemselvesinrelationtothisgrid.
Shaetal.[106]circumventedthetediousandverytimeconsumingreference
griddeploymentphaseintheirFireNet. Firemenarelocalizedusingamoreerror-
prone multi-hop ranging system (overotherfiremen). The required anchors are

inside ofthe firetrucks, whichstillneedan additionallocalization system (here:
GPS)tosolvetheinitiallocalizationproblem. Acombinationofbothsystems,nearly
instantaneousoperabilitywithoutlosingaccuracyonthefront,wouldbeasystem
fromwhichSaRmissionscouldgreatlybenefit.
Hightower and Borriello [63] mentioned that future research directions for
localizationsystemsinubiquitouscomputing“shouldgenerallyfocusonlowering
cost,reducingtheamountofinfrastructure,improvescalability,andcreatingsystems
thataremoreflexible”.
Thesefourpropertiesapplyperfectlytoanapplicationthatenvisionedin1997,
where a research group from the University of California (Berkeley) proposed a
hypothetical system called Smart Dust [70]. It consists of Dust motes, which are
extremelysmall(1mm3)solarpowereddevices. Thousandsofthoselow-cost($0.10)
sensor-equippedunitsshouldbespreadoutinagivenareaofmanysquaremiles
totrackthemotionofvehiclesoverhoursordays. Asidefromchallengingissues
like size and communication, knowing the position of a sensor node is anything
buttrivial. Size,energydemands,andcostsconstraintsclearlyrestricttheusageof
GPS,butsensorreadings,likevibrations,areuselesswithoutknowingwherethey
wererecorded. Manuallysettingpositioninformationonthousandsofdustmotes
is economically inefficient or may even not be possible in certain environments
like a battlefield due to the inaccessibility of the motes. Hence, a different fully
autonomous method must be utilized to obtain the location information of each
mote.
Countlessotherexamplesexistwhereaflexiblebutalsoresource-savinglocal-
izationsystemisneeded. Especiallythesetupofthereferenceinfrastructuremay
beeconomicallyimpracticalormanualdeploymentmayevenbeimpossible. Inthe
courseofthiswork,wefocusonamodularlocalizationschemewhichhasnoneof
theseinitialrequirements. Basedonafullydistributedarchitectureandwithoutany
substantialknowledge,positionawarenessforeveryparticipantistobegenerated.
Itisespeciallychallengingtogeneratevalidinformationandnottopropagatepo-
sitionerrorswithouttheverificationofaglobalview/knowledge. Additionally,to
beapplicableforawiderangeofapplications,thefollowingpropertieshavetobe
fulfilled:
Lowestrequirements enable a broad variety of uses cases. We assume that the
shapeandsizeoftheareaofinterestiscompletelyunknown. Additionally,
theamountofparticipatingnodesisalsounknownandmayevenvaryover
time. Neither a global knowledge/synchronization amongst all nodes (no
GPS)noracentralcoordinatingunitispresentandonlylocalmeasurements
anddecisionareperformed.
