Seit Dezember des Jahres 3586, als die SOL unter dem Kommando der Solgeborenen auf große Fahrt ging und mit unbekanntem Ziel in den Tiefen des Sternenmeeres verschwand, sind mehr als zweihundert Jahre vergangen, und niemand hat in der Zwischenzeit etwas vom Verbleib des Generationenschiffs gehört. Im Jahr 3791 ist es jedoch soweit – und ein Mann kommt wieder in Kontakt mit dem verschollenen Schiff. Dieser Mann ist Atlan. Die Kosmokraten entlassen ihn, damit er sich um die SOL kümmert und sie einer neuen Bestimmung zuführt. Gegenwärtig hat die SOL ihren Flug im Guel-System unterbrochen. Atlan, Bjo Breiskoll und Wajsto Kolsch sind von Bord gegangen und auf der Welt der Chailiden gelandet, um das Rätsel des Volkes der Meditierenden zu lösen. Atlans Bemühungen sind anfänglich nicht gerade von Erfolg gekrönt, doch als auch noch Y’Man, der seltsame Robot von Osath, die SOL verläßt und auf Chail auftaucht, kommt Bewegung in die bislang stagnierende Situation auf dem Planeten, und viele Chailiden beginnen ihr Verhältnis zu den Roxharen mit anderen Augen zu sehen. Auch bei den Roxharen selbst zeichnet sich eine unerwartete Entwicklung ab – es kommt zum AUFSTAND DER IMMUNEN ...
